Position Overview:

Ingevity's Performance Materials business has grown into its role as a true global market leader based on our distinctive approach to the development of innovative products and efficient processes. We're looking for a new analytical chemist for our team who will build upon that tradition and join us as we explore new directions. Our premium-performance activated carbon products are already used in many applications around the globe - automotive emission control, water purification, gas storage and separations, to name a few. Our customers expect us to reliably supply product with consistent, optimum performance.

The analytical chemist position is part of the Product and Process Development team within the Performance Materials Technical group. This position will support the analytical and materials characterization needs of our technical teams, operations and the business unit to support existing products and manufacturing processes as well as the development of new products and processes for new markets.Responsibilities of the position include analytical method development, maintaining and troubleshooting instrumentation as well as designing, planning and executing experiments, participating in plant trials when needed, and documenting results.The ability to respond quickly to changing project needs and work well within a team are critical aspects of the position.

How you will Impact Ingevity:

  • Bring passion to your role as a subject matter expert in materials characterization to help create new materials for either existing market applications or developing business opportunities.
  • Develop analytical methods to assist with materials development and process improvement. This will demand ingenuity, experimental design, statistical data analysis and communication across multifunctional groups.
  • Deliver creativity and critical thinking to solve open-ended problems.
  • Provide consultation on appropriate methods to characterize materials
  • Communicate high level theoretical results through monthly reports, technical memos, and presentations to a variety of audiences and stakeholders.
  • Balance multiple project priorities, apply practicality, assure flexibility and pitch in to help the team.
  • Leverage external partners or vendors to help accelerate innovation.
  • Become a cohesive member of our team; treat people with respect and listen openly to their ideas and opinions.
  • Lead and mentor more junior team members.

What you need to succeed:

  • Ph.D. in an appropriate field such as Analytical Chemistry, or Material Science.
  • A minimum of 3 years "hands on" experience in a working lab or manufacturing setting. (An additional 3 years of relevant experience will be considered for candidates with a M.Sc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in analytical method development
  • Familiarity with a range of materials characterization methods including IR spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, microscopy, GC-MS, ICP-OES, SEM-EDX, TGA, DSC, DMA, XRF and XRD.
  • Experience with method development for adsorption and catalysis applications, such as porosimetry, dynamic adsorption equipment, temperature programmed desorption and breakthrough analysis is preferred.
  • Attention to safety in every aspect of your work.
  • Willingness to travel to manufacturing and trial locations around the globe up to 20%.
  • Skills in planning, leading and executing research projects, including analyzing, validating, and reporting results.
  • Detailed analysis of data using modern statistical tools such as Minitab or JMP.
  • This position is eligible for relocation assistance.
