Our Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Senior Managing Scientist for our Human Factors Practice in Phoenix, AZ. In this role, you will work as part of a team to help our clients solve challenging technical problems that are often urgent, high profile, and multi-disciplinary. We are looking for an experienced consultant to lead and drive human factors research and usability strategies for consumer products, lead and develop staff, and further expand our services to current and new clients.



You will be responsible for

  • Supporting a range of consulting activities that involve user studies and human factors analysis, including safety and limitations of human perceptual, cognitive, and response capabilities
  • Oversee and conduct user research, usability testing, and human factors evaluations for consumer products throughout the product development lifecycle
  • Developing client contacts and growing the human factors business with a particular focus on expanding client relationships
  • Identifying, developing, and securing new business opportunities and promoting Exponent's service offerings
  • Working on multi-disciplinary projects
  • Providing case management, data processing, and other project support
  • Conduct and oversee user testing in lab settings, in-home usage, and real-world environments
  • Conducting research to obtain and review technical data, scientific literature, and standards
  • Oversee project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation to ensure efficient execution of projects


You will have the following skills and qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Experimental, Computational, Developmental or Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Science, Cognitive Neuroscience, or related field
  • Undergraduate degree in psychology, engineering, or a related discipline
  • At least five (5) years of experience in product development, usability testing, consumer product technology, health and safety investigation, or relevant field
  • Proficiency in experimental design, human subjects testing, instrumentation, data analysis, and computer programming (e.g. Matlab, SAS, SPSS, Labview, etc.)
  • Proven business development and client management track record, and the ability to attract projects
  • Outstanding reputation among clients for integrity, responsiveness, and technical expertise
  • Targeted business development plan for specific clients/sectors
  • Ability to translate complex research findings into actionable insights and present to diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to attract projects to support full-time staff and to manage and develop a group of junior staff
  • Proactiveness, organization, and the ability to multi-task and work well in demanding situations
  • Ability to defend conclusions in adversarial contexts through written and verbal media
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills
