Job Summary
The College of Education's Office of Academic Faculty Affairs is hiring an Academic Advisor I/II to assist. This role advises students on course selection, requirements for selected area of concentration, and post-college plans to help meet educational needs and realize student scholastic goals. Develops and oversees advising functions, applies in-depth and comprehensive knowledge, and may serve as mentor/trainer of new Advisors and support staff.

Essential Functions
The individual in this position provides professional level academic advising/counseling and student support at the college level.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides advisement/counseling for students in matters related to goals, choice of curriculum, course load, study habits, and course scheduling/selecting.
  • Assists in registration coordination procedures and schedule adjustments including verification of appropriateness of transient student requests.
  • Assists with student orientation, whether freshman or transfer students.
  • Serves as a resource for the university's student database including coordinating input, generating reports, training users, and recommending updates
  • Verifies/reports student and course information which may include (but not limited to) class rolls, grades, academic certification of athletes/veterans, statistical analyses, and/or forced drops.
  • Evaluates and/or updates student records in order to post grades, complete graduation checks, monitor students' progress, and advise students on an appropriate course of study.
  • A primary role of this position involves tracking and clearances of students in various educator preparation programs. May also assist with recruitment of prospective students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
Academic Advisor I: Bachelor's degree with no specific discipline. Experience in academic advising preferred.

Academic Advisor II: Bachelor's degree with no specific discipline.
3 years of experience in advising of which 2 years includes full-time primary duties of advising in higher ed.
Or
Master's degree No specific discipline. For positions that require the employee to teach, Master's degree is required plus 2 years of experience in advising including full-time primary duties of advising in higher ed.
Or
PhD No specific discipline plus 2 years of Experience in advising including full-time primary duties of advising in higher ed.
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications


Minimum Skills and Abilities
In-depth and comprehensive knowledge of advising policies, practices, and procedures at the postsecondary level.

Desired Qualifications
Desired qualifications include university experience working with students in a university environment; strong critical thinking skills; strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines; college level student academic advising experience and proficiency with relevant computer skills such as Excel and Microsoft Word; experience using Banner, DegreeWorks, and AdviseAssist; experience working with students with academic difficulty.
