General Summary of Position

Job Summary:

MedStar Health is looking for a Genetic Counselor to join our team at MedStar Franklin Square Hospital.

As a Genetic Counselor, you will be responsible for interviewing and counseling patients with a personal or family history of cancer, providing pre- and post-genetic counseling, collecting family and medical histories, assessing genetic risks, explaining genetic information, offering genetic testing, and referring individuals to appropriate specialists.

Primary Duties:

Collects genetic information preparing for each patient
referred.
Contributes to the achievement of established department
goals and objectives and adheres to department policies,
procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies
with governmental and accreditation regulations.
Explains to patients and their family members genetic
risks, diagnosis, and available intervention. Supplies pertinent
written information to patients and physicians.
Gathers information and utilizes resources from various
sources; calculates or cites empiric genetic risks to each
individual patient or family member.
Gives lectures and educational sessions on genetic
counseling and medical genetics issues to residents, staff, and
community.
Identifies at-risk individuals and offers appropriate
tests and referrals to genetic specialists.
Interviews patients by taking family and medical
histories to identify significant genetic and environmental risk factors.
Maintains patients' files and records, such as number of
patients counseled and types of referrals, according to
departmental standards.
Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service
improvement teams, in meetings and on committees, and represents
the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling(required)

  • Prior Work experience not (required)

  • 1-2 year's genetic counseling experience (preferred)

  • Valid license to practice genetic counseling in the State of Maryland upon hire.

  • American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification within one year required.

This position has a hiring range of $72,758 - $130,041
