joinourteamat MedStar Franklin Square Hospital in Medical
Oncology. Our multidisciplinary oncology team includes another full-time genetic
counselor, genetic counselor assistant, medical oncologists, surgical
oncologists, pathologists as well as social workers. The ideal
candidate will havestrongverbal and written communication
skills.

The Genetic Counselor will
interview and counsel patients with a personal and/or family history of
cancer.Responsible for pre and post genetic counseling of referred
individuals. Takes family and medical histories, assesses genetic risks, offers
genetic testing, explains genetic information, communicates, and documents test
results to physicians as well as patients, and makes
referralstoappropriate specialists.

Primary Duties:

  • Collects genetic information preparing for each patient referred. Explains to patients and their family members genetic risks, diagnosis, and available intervention. Supplies pertinent written information to patients and physicians. Gathers information and utilizes resources from various sources; calculates or cites empiric genetic risks to each individual patient or family member.

  • Gives lectures and educational sessions on genetic counseling and medical genetics issues to residents, staff, and community.

  • Identifies at-risk individuals and offers appropriate tests and referrals to genetic specialists. Interviews patients by taking family, medical, and pregnancy histories to identify significant genetic and environmental risk factors.

  • Maintains patients' files and records, such as number of patients counseled and types of referrals, according to departmental and laboratory standards.

  • Prepares letters to patients and physicians after counseling session. Receives referrals and schedules appointments within a week of referral and logs with accuracy.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling.

  • American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification within one year of hire.

  • 2 years genetic counseling experience preferred.
