Position Overview The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Laboratory Technician. This full-time position focuses on supporting the analysis of water and aqueous solutions using a variety of advanced analytical instruments, including ICP-OES, ICP-MS, TOC, IC, nutrient analyzer, and alkalinity titration systems. The ideal candidate will assist in day-to-day lab operations, sample analysis, data QA/QC and analysis, and instrument maintenance. Job Description 40%: Operate and maintain analytical instruments, including ICP-OES, ICP-MS, TOC analyzers, IC, nutrient analyzers, and alkalinity titrators. 35%: Perform essential lab tasks such as preparing chemical standards, sample filtration, acidification, cleaning glassware, and conducting precise sample measurements. 20%: Assist with data analysis and QA/QC, instrument calibration, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance. Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and quality control standards. 5%: Participate in occasional field sampling campaigns. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related discipline. Experience with general lab practices, including standard preparation and wet chemistry techniques, as evidenced by application material. Experience working in a laboratory setting (coursework experience will be considered), as evidenced by application material. Knowledge of safe laboratory practices and experience adhering to established laboratory safety protocols, as evidenced by application material. Experience with meeting project deadlines in a lab setting, as evidenced by application materials. Previous work experience that required strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently. Work experience that required communication and collaboration skills to effectively work in a team environment, as demonstrated by application materials. Previous work experience that required critical thinking and time management abilities, as evidenced in application materials. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related discipline. Experience operating analytical instruments such as ICP-OES, ICP-MS, IC, TOC analyzers, and nutrient analyzers, as evidenced by application material. Previous laboratory experience with aqueous sample analysis and trace metal analysis, as evidenced by application material. Previous work experience that required instrumentation troubleshooting, as evidenced in application materials. Experience using data analysis software (including Excel and/or R), especially in environmental, geological, or chemical analysis settings, as evidenced by application material.
