Role Description

Form Energy is looking for an experienced Prototype Shop Technician to fabricate parts and help maintain the prototyping shop at our Berkeley R&D site. This role will report to our Build and Design prototyping team, which supports product design and testing development. As part of our Build and Design team, you will work with the Prototype Shop Lead to process prototype work orders, maintain and repair equipment, and facilitate the installation of new pieces of machinery into the shop. Among other tools, you will be operating a CNC mill, laser cutter, and 3D printers. In this role, you will collaborate on designing custom mechanical solutions for unique design challenges, as well as independently fabricating and implementing those solutions. We ensure that our shops are accessible to all team members at Form Energy. Training and supervising other shop users are essential aspects of this position.

What you'll do:
  • Utilize shop equipment to fabricate plastic and metal parts to specifications laid out in engineering drawings

  • Support the assembly and build of prototype cell designs

  • Assist in managing the prototyping shop by overseeing machine functionality, maintaining stock inventory, ensuring safety standards, and upholding cleanliness in the workspace

  • Develop shop equipment trainings to mentor a growing team of technicians, engineers, and scientists on best shop practices and effective tool usage

  • Recommend, as well as lead in the installation and assembly of new equipment or tools to increase shop capability

What you'll bring:
  • 5+ years working as a machinist or in a machine shop setting

  • Prior teaching or training experience in a shop setting

  • Comfort working with plastics, aluminum, and steel

  • Strong sense of patience and safety in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings and GD&T tolerancing

  • Comfort using digital tools, ticketing systems, and experience with CAD software
