Description

Waukesha County's Department of Health & Human Services is recruiting for a talented Senior Care Manager to join the Child and Youth Family Services Division in the Juvenile Court Intake Unit. The purpose of the Child and Youth Family Services Division is to serve individuals and families of Waukesha County by providing quality and professional services. We strive to use the many formal and informal supports within families and our community to keep children in their home whenever safely possible. We value collaboration and coordination with the families we serve, community professionals, and within our department to implement effective prevention and intervention strategies. We are committed to providing the appropriate level of intervention and protection, while encouraging youth and families to utilize their strengths toward independence and self-sufficiency whenever possible. While adhering to legal mandates, our work will be conducted in an atmosphere of respect, compassion, and confidentiality.

If you're interested in a role focused on juvenile court intake, you'll be part of the initial decision-making process which determines case outcomes for referred youth. Key values associated with juvenile court intake include:

  1. Rehabilitation: The primary goal of the juvenile justice system is often seen as rehabilitating young offenders rather than simply punishing them. Intake processes aim to identify the needs of the juvenile and provide appropriate interventions, such as counseling, education, or community service, to address underlying issues that may have contributed to their involvement in delinquent behavior.
  2. Best interests of the child: Juvenile court intake procedures prioritize the welfare and best interests of the juvenile. This involves considering factors such as the child's age, developmental stage, family circumstances, and any special needs or vulnerabilities they may have.
  3. Prevention of future delinquency: Intake assessments focus on identifying risk factors and protective factors associated with the juvenile's behavior through the use of the Youth Assessment and Screening Instrument (YASI). The aim is to determine risk level, develop strategies to prevent future delinquent behavior and promote positive youth development.
  4. Fairness and due process: While the juvenile justice system is distinct from the adult criminal justice system, juveniles are still entitled to certain rights and protections. Intake procedures ensure fairness and due process, including the right to legal representation, the right to be heard, and the right to appeal decisions.
  5. Community safety: While rehabilitation is a central focus, juvenile court intake also considers public safety. Interventions and dispositions are tailored not only to address the needs of the juvenile but also to protect the community from potential harm.
  6. Accountability: Although the emphasis is on rehabilitation, juveniles are held accountable for their actions. Intake procedures may involve discussions with the juvenile about the consequences of their behavior and the importance of taking responsibility for their actions.
  7. Individualized approach: Intake assessments recognize that each juvenile is unique and that one-size-fits-all approaches may not be effective. Therefore, intake procedures aim to develop individualized plans that address the specific needs and circumstances of each juvenile.

These values guide the decision-making process during juvenile court intake and shape the interventions and dispositions that are recommended for juveniles who come into contact with the juvenile justice system.
