Job Description:

Responsible for counseling and mental health services in the areas of staffing, strategic planning, policy, budget, clinical services, programming, and adherence to legal, professional, and ethical standards. Provides counseling, consultation, educational outreach, and urgent-response services to Trinity University students in support of the mission of the office and the division of Student Affairs.

JOB DUTIES

Leadership and Administration

  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of Counseling Services. Collaborates with the Associate Director of Counseling Services and the Operations Manager of Integrated Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services.

  • Develops and implements policies and programs around service-delivery, ethical/legal practices, staff development, and resource utilization.

  • Directly supervises three clinical staff, the Associate Director of Counseling Services, the Senior Mental Health Counselor, and the Psychiatrist.

  • Manages the Counseling Services budget.

  • Prepares monthly and annual reports regarding utilization, trends, and performance indicators.

Clinical and Counseling Services

  • As a member of the clinical care team:

    • Provides individual and group counseling to students, addressing developmental, interpersonal, or psychological challenges.

    • Screens clients for psychological disorders, coordinates referral for further evaluation, and documents all clinical interactions.

    • Maintains clinical records to document counseling contacts. Participates in clinical staff meetings Obtains clinically relevant professional development that is also necessary to maintain professional licensure.

    • Serves on the on-call rotation (approximately one week per month) in a remote capacity (phone) providing crisis evaluation, triage, disposition planning, and coordination with campus partners. Serves as on-call back-up throughout the academic year. Serves as the primary on-call counselor during June and July.

    • Works collaboratively with the Integrated Care Team (Health Services, and Trinity Sports Medicine) supporting individual students who require care collaboration between care teams.

  • Serves as a clinical expert within the team, offering guidance and support on difficult cases and establishing operational protocols.

Consultation and Collaboration

  • Provides expert counsel to TU HEART, the behavioral intervention/case management team. Leads counseling involvement in crisis interventions and post-ventions.

  • Serves as a resource and consultant to faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and external health professionals on student health and psychological issues.

  • Directs the development of liaison relationships with campus departments, faculty, student organizations, and external partners to advocate for and integrate mental health resources within the larger campus community.

Strategic Planning

  • Leads analysis of campus needs, and advocates for necessary resources, staff, or program adjustments for Counseling Services.

  • Is responsible for writing the Annual Report (in collaboration with the Associate Director of Counseling Services) each June.

  • Collaborates with the Integrated Counseling, Health, and Wellness Services leadership to develop departmental learning outcomes, performance indicators, and strategic planning.

  • Participates in university committees, advocating for mental health policies.

Program Development and Implementation

  • Directs initiatives to develop, implement, and assess mental health programs and services that align with the university's mission and respond to the student population's needs.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Cooperates and collaborates with other employees in the spirit of teamwork and collegiality and interacts with confidence, patience and integrity to provide professional leadership during emergencies.

  • Complies with all Trinity University policies and guidelines.

  • Performs other duties as required.

EDUCATION

Required:

  • A doctoral degree from an accredited counseling or clinical psychology program, counselor or counselor education program, or clinical social work program.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Ten years of experience as a mental health professional post-licensure.

  • Three years of full-time experience in a college or university counseling center, which may include a year-long, full-time internship and/or post-doctoral fellowship in a college or university counseling center.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a leadership position within a college or university counseling center, such as Clinical Director, Clinical Training Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator, Assistant Director, or Associate Director.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Required:

  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, organizational, supervisory, strategic planning, and crisis management skills.

  • Exemplary ethical decision making, with an ability to hold (and advocate for) ethical boundaries.

  • Advanced knowledge of mental and physical health issues impacting young adults.

  • Proficiency in developing and implementing health and wellness policies.

  • Proficiency in public speaking and written communication.

Preferred:

  • Extensive knowledge of college health issues, mental health regulations, and therapeutic practices.

  • Strong interpersonal, supervisory, and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.

  • Proven leadership capabilities in clinical, educational, and crisis settings.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Must be licensed in Texas (e.g., LPC, LCSW, Psychologist); if not licensed in Texas, must become licensed in Texas within 18 months of beginning employment in order to remain eligible for reappointment.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • All jobs require a current Criminal Background Check (CBC).
