Grandview Catering & Events provides handcrafted fare and unique experiences brought to life by culinary and event professionals inspired by the latest trends and classic comforts. We focus on attention to detail, quality ingredients and sustainable practices with exceptional customer service. We proudly serve Appalachian State University campuses as well as off-site events for university affiliated businesses, community members and alumni with Grandview Ballroom featured as our premiere event space.
We're looking for a team-oriented and driven individual to hit the ground running and join our growing team. The successful candidate will work with others to ensure the highest quality of food is prepared and ready to be served within the appropriate time frame.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Cooking and assisting in the food production for catered events
  • Help prepare kitchen area, work spaces and event set ups for food preparation and service
  • Working alongside and assisting the catering sous chefs and executive catering chef
  • Willingness to step in as needed to assist all back-of-house positions including other cooks, pastry chef, sous chef, dishwasher, set up crew and student staff
  • Following menu standards, standardized specifications, and ServSafe protocol
  • Monitoring the quality of the product and service provided
  • Understanding and executing all safe food handling policies and procedures
  • Managing multiple tasks and meet deadlines during each shift
  • Maintaining open and frequent communication with team members and supervisor regarding event status, questions, concerns and new ideas
  • Fostering positive working relationships with coworkers while remaining professional and respectful at all times
  • Working with the entire Grandview team on other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

  • Comprehensive understanding of culinary techniques gained through two years of practical experience
  • Banquet and fine dining skills
  • Strong knowledge of cooking methods, kitchen equipment, and best practices.
  • Visual-motor coordination and time-management skills
  • Ability to remain composed and perform well with tight deadlines
  • Teamwork-oriented with outstanding leadership abilities
  • Experience with proper storage techniques, inventory management, sanitation and safety

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in culinary science or relevant field
  • 2+ years of related experience in a high-volume catering environment
  • Culinary School/ACF Certification
  • ServSafe certification - or willingness to obtain it 1 year of employment

Required Functional Competencies to Successfully Perform Job Duties.
Safety & Health Compliance:
Uses food handling, storage and rotation techniques to avoid cross contamination and recognize critical control points. Inspects work products and assists in food service and kitchen clean up procedures. Follow state, univeristy and Grandview polocies and procedures. Foods stored according to state health laws. Clean work area maintained by removing dirt/dust/stains, wiping up spills quickly. Storing and labeling cleaning supplies appropriately. Enforces and informs others of appropriate health and sanitation guidelines.
Communication (Presentation, Oral & Written):
Communicates civilly and respectfully with all kitchen staff, and other members of the department including servers, porter, event coordinators, managers, etc. Be in constant communication with your team to complete catering orders. Give management team feedback on issues we are having so that we can correct. Facilitates communication among the work group in a manner that helps accomplish daily work goals.
Planning & Organizing Work:
Plans daily or weekly work to meet established objectives. Plans work operations, establishes priorities, and sets deadlines over a short range period, within established goal and objectives. Takes action to achieve goals beyond what is required by looking ahead and planning accordingly to the needs of the business both independently and with supervision. Be able to read, follow and adjust menus as needed. Conveys a positive attitude to other employees while supporting the goals of the food service operation. Identifies problems and brings to attention of appropriate authority.
Pay will be commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity and market considerations.
