Primary Purpose The IT Project Telecommunications Engineer is a technical role which supports Sempra Infrastructure in the planning, design, budgeting and implementation of new construction and renovation projects for IT/OT infrastructure in collaboration with technical staff, engineering consultants, installers, and vendors. This position will gather and document requirements, engineer solutions, scope, budget and coordinate technical delivery across various vendors, and communicate with multiple business stakeholders at a variety of levels. The ideal candidate will have a background in successful IT infrastructure project implementation with knowledge of both IT and OT technology. This role is responsible for overseeing onsite technology infrastructure buildouts including coordination of site surveys, structured cabling, audio/visual technology, rack deployment, racking and stacking of equipment, and other facility work such as power, cooling, and wireless technologies. Common tasks for a telecommunications engineer can include planning, designing, testing, and implementing telecommunications systems and networks like switches, routers, modems, antennas, cables, and servers. Implement system renovation projects in collaboration with technical staff, engineering consultants, installers, and vendors. Duties and Responsibilities Value Delivery, Strategy, and Planning with an Emphasis on Telecomm Engineering
- Gather business requirements for projects, such as new facilities/offices, to determine the IT and OT operational requirements.
- Serve as the technical liaison between business project stakeholders and the IT/Cybersecurity project delivery teams.
- Design or configure IT Infrastructure systems, including but not limited to, audio visual, wired, wireless, and satellite communications systems for voice, video, and data services.
Supervise installation, service, and maintenance.
- Assist in the development of budgets
- Coordinate cross-functional workstreams with vendors to establish core network infrastructure services such as internet access, racks, power sourcing, cooling systems, structured cabling, AV conference systems.
- Monitor and analyze the performance, reliability, and security of telecommunications systems and networks to identify any issues or faults.
- Understand, recommend, and adhere to best practices for IT/OT infrastructure design. Telecommunications engineer researches and evaluates new technologies, standards, and trends in telecommunications while developing innovative solutions and improvements.
Delivery and Execution
- Plan, design, implement, and oversee projects within budget, optimizing for cost when possible.
- Responsible for IT project installation, configuration, and documentation.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade existing telecommunications systems and networks as well as provide technical support and training to users and clients.
- Facilitate implementation of new projects including organizing vendor site visits and operational surveys, establishing and ensuring adherence to implementation schedules, and tracking project plan progress to safeguard project success.
- Contacts and coordinates with vendor and remote support when necessary to resolve high impact issues
Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with business units, IT/Cybersecurity, and 3rd party resources to ensure project success.
- Articulate technical concepts in clear language for the appropriate audience with a focus on how technical decisions impact the business users.
- Coordinate with other engineers, technicians, contractors, suppliers, and stakeholders in the telecommunications industry while following relevant codes, regulations, and policies
- Create and deliver presentations, status reports, diagrams, budgets, etc. as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in computer science, computer information systems, engineering, related discipline, or equivalent training and/or experience, including Military.
- 5+ years experience designing, implementing, and managing IT/OT infrastructure related projects.
- 5+ years experience with network Infrastructure (structured cabling, fiber optics, power, cooling, telecom rooms.
- Ability to build project plans and workflow designs, organizing multiple vendors and stakeholders to deliver quality products on time.
- Ability to manage stakeholder expectations and communicate with stakeholders at different levels to provide appropriate and effective information critical to successful project implementation.
- Understanding of IT and OT product capabilities and product dependencies to coordinate with vendors and provide direction in design and implementation of technology at new sites Intermediate.
- Keep abreast of changes in industry practices and emerging telecommunications technology by reviewing current literature, talking with colleagues, participating in educational programs, attending meetings or workshops, or participating in professional organizations or conferences.
- Understanding of project management and stakeholder management (either agile or waterfall methodologies).
- Understanding of process flow mapping and workflow design.
- Knowledge of core IT and OT systems and vendors including Cisco voice and video conference tools, internet access point design, power sourcing, racks, cooling systems, and structured cabling.
- Entry level understanding of technology business architecture frameworks including business value chains, capabilities, processes, products/services, and governance structures. Intermediate.
- Available to travel up to 25%, including international travel to Mexico
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years' experience with Network Engineering (routing, switching, firewalls, wireless, etc.).
- 3+ years A/V system planning, designing, implementation.
- Familiarity with Palo Alto or Cisco firewalls, VPN products, Microsoft collaboration products, Azure cloud, monitor and altering systems, and Cisco routing and switching.
- Bilingual - (English/Spanish) speaker a big plus.
- Cisco Certifications: CCNA, CCNP, etc.
- Project Management Certifications: PMP, CAPM, etc.
REMOTE: Work remote majority of time. Time onsite is for specific and scheduled purposes.
