Job Summary |
The Assistant Director for Career Exploration Counseling will lead and coordinate various experiential learning and career exploration events, provide comprehensive career counseling, and collaborate with campus partners to enhance student career readiness. This role involves supervising graduate assistants and interns, contributing to curriculum development, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives within the Exploration Center.

Essential Functions |
Career Exploration Counseling:
- Collaborate as Exploration Center Leadership on outcomes and assessments for career counseling.
- Set expectations for appointments, workshops, and referrals to ensure consistency in student experience.
- Train Academic Advisors and Career Counselors to establish scope of practice using theory and evidence-based interventions.
- Help establish and maintain an efficient referral process within the Exploration Center and with campus partners.
- Manage career exploration software and resources (all media), and develop processes for usage assessment and for updating and revising resources.
Supervision and Training:
- Supervise a team of Career Exploration Counselors.
- Supervise graduate assistants and interns enrolled in counselor education programs.
- Help plan and provide training and professional development opportunities for staff, including GTAs, GAs, and Interns.
- Help develop and maintain training and operations resources, including policies, procedures, campus and community resources, and crisis plans.
- Abide by professional standards, ethics, and laws in both counseling and supervision practice (ACA, NCDA, NACE, ABEC)
Experiential Learning:
Major Exploration Fair:
- Coordinate event details with colleges and programs.
- Plan the event with CDS event staff.
- Collaborate with the Exploration Center team on outcomes and assignments.
- Design student preparation activities, including workshops.
- Arrange staffing for student support and accountability.
- Implement post-event assessments for students and partners.
Career Exploration Events:
- Identify and schedule campus events to foster career exploration.
- Coordinate with campus partners to confirm student participation and set expectations.
- Lead the creation of specific events sponsored by the Exploration Center and Career Discover and Success
- Design student preparation activities, including workshops.
- Arrange staffing for student support and accountability.
- Implement post-event assessments for students and coordinate with event sponsors on surveying methods.
Exploring Experiences
- Collaborate with the Career Connections team to develop a sustainable job shadow program.
- Develop, in partnership with the Connections Team, a process and inventory of contacts for informational interviewing.
- Utilize student interest data to establish industry specific networking opportunities, including panel sessions, career trek opportunities, and career communities.
Teaching and Curriculum Development:
- Contribute to the development of course curricula, lesson plans, and materials for Exploratory Courses and the Action Program, emphasizing Career Exploration, Career Development, and Career Readiness.
- Support and develop Student Learning Outcomes and assessment methods for career decision-making, career readiness, and competency development through co-curricular experiences and high impact practices.
- Typically teach an Exploratory course each year, and as needed.
Collaborating with Career Strategy Team:
- Serve as the primary CDS liaison to University College (primarily students in the Interdisciplinary Studies major), supporting career development, career readiness, and professional development for students.
- Work with the Director for University Career Strategy to develop resources and support services that moves students through a decision making and developmental-learning process for career development.
- Support the development and continuous improvement of Connect the Creed and Faculty Toolkits.
- Manage data and analysis related to Connect the Creed, providing reports to campus stakeholders and supporting the development of proactive intervention strategies.
- Collaborate with the career strategy team to develop and update career development resources (all types of media).
Data Informed Approach Supporting Continuous Improvement:
- Contribute to a culture of data informed decision-making in partnership with leadership in the Exploration Center and Career Discovery and Success that aligns with strategic plans at the university and unit level.
- Contribute to the development of data informed strategies, interventions, and evaluation methods.
- Develop and compile end of semester and annual reports.
- Collaborate as a leader within the Exploration Center in reviewing and assessing overall exploratory services and planning for continuous improvement that develop annual operating strategies aligned with key performance indicators for student success.
- Oversee assessments of career counseling services and programs, including but not limited to appointments and workshops.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications |
- Master's Degree in Career Counseling, Counselor Education and Supervision, School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling Psychology, or School Psychology.
- 5 years of experience in career services or career counseling in a university or college setting.
- Must have at least 1 year of leading, supervising, and mentoring a professional team.

- Knowledge of career counseling and counseling practice, as well as counseling supervision.
- Competence in legal and ethical decision-making and multicultural counseling.
- Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative assessment, as well as university policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of career counseling and student development theory and practice, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), HPAA, Title IX, Title VII, EEO, National Career Development Association (NCDA) Ethical Standards, National Association of Colleges, and Employers (NACE) standards and university policies and procedures.
