The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Capital Finance reports to the Director as part of the Capital Finance group within Columbia University Facilities and Operations (CUFO) which is responsible for a wide array of tasks related to the financial reporting and controls for all capital projects.

Responsibilities



  • The Assistant Director will assist the Director with the oversight and management of the capital plan for the state of good repair capital projects and investments. These portfolios average $90-95M annually. The Assistant Director will also assist with the oversight and management of the Green Revolving Fund, a sustainability initiative to reinvest utility savings related to capital investments.
  • Responsible for interpreting and communicating established University policies for the various departments within CUFO. This may include written policy statements for distribution to all CUFO employees and clients and individual guidance for funding approval, budgeting, or other individual transactions.
  • Maintains a strong working knowledge and relationship with stakeholders in multiple departments. Additionally the Assistant Director will identify and draft new policies or revise existing policies as needed and guided by management. They will assist the Director with the capital project funding authorization process, the oversight and submission of property loss insurance claims, and tracking of tenant reimbursements.
  • Responsible for the oversight and guidance to at least one Financial Coordinator, Analyst, or Manager. The Assistant Director will set goals and manage the ongoing performance of the at least one Financial Coordinator, Analyst, or Manager.
  • Responsible for the accounting structure of capital projects within the University financial accounting system. As well as the monitoring of the creation and access management of projects created by the Financial Coordinator, Analyst, or Manager and final verification of key information and metrics, financial reporting, and financial closeout and reconciliation of projects within the Facilities' project management system. Responsible for the review and refinement of project cash flow generated by the Financial Coordinator, Analyst, or Manager for reporting to the Office of Management & Budget.
  • Responsible for the review of the oversight of financial variance analyses identified through different methods including but not limited to, advanced Excel analysis using unique identifiers, modification of SQL coding, and direct review within the different systems to confirm correct accounting of financials by the Financial Coordinator, Analyst, or Manager.
  • The incumbent is incharge for the accurate and prompt processing, verification, and financial approval of expenses for all invoices, purchase orders, change orders, and potential change orders, and other financial transactions within the University financial accounting systems and project management and work order systems amounting to millions of dollars per fiscal year.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree, plus a minimum of 5 years related experience required, preferably in finance and budgeting of capital construction projects.
  • Must possess strong technical skills, analytical skills, critical thinking and practical problem solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication, writing, presentation, quantitative, and interpersonal skills required. Advanced knowledge of Excel, Word, Windows, Visio, PowerPoint and data applications required.
  • Exposure to data visualization tools (PowerBI, Tableau, etc.) desired. Strong research skills needed. Ability to work as a member of a collaborative team while exercising independent judgment is essential.
  • Must possess discretion and be able to handle multiple concurrent projects.
