Summary
The Manufacturing Engineer optimizes production processes to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure compliance with industry standards. This position designs and tests new processes, troubleshoots issues, and supports continuous improvement initiatives. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, this role documents changes and trains staff on improved processes. Additionally, they oversee plant maintenance, utilities, and sustainability efforts.
Essential Functions
Analyzes current production and plant processes and identifies areas for improvement. Develops and implements process optimization strategies to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Designs and tests new manufacturing processes and equipment. Monitors production metrics and troubleshoots process-related issues. Ensures compliance with industry regulations, safety standards, and quality requirements. Collaborates with cross-functional teams including production, quality assurance, and R&D. Documents processes, changes, and improvements for future reference. Trains production staff on new and updated processes. Utilizes data analysis and statistical tools to drive process improvements. Supports continuous improvement initiatives such as Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma. Oversees plant maintenance, including equipment troubleshooting and repair planning. Develops and implements preventative maintenance programs to reduce downtime. Ensures the efficient operation of utilities such as HVAC, boilers, and water systems. Works with vendors and suppliers to procure and maintain necessary equipment. Identifies opportunities for sustainability and energy efficiency improvements. Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, or related field) required. 2-3 years of experience as an engineer is required, preferably in the manufacturing industry. Familiarity with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) preferred. Understanding of environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations. Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies. Proficiency in data analysis tools. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Physical Demands
Ability to sit continuously at a computer. Lift up to 5 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Standing - ability to stand for long periods.
Work Environment
Work takes place in office settings; this position is 100% on site at our HQ in Portland, Oregon and will spend, on average, half of their time working at their desk and half of their time working in a manufacturing environment. Travels locally via car to other facilities and occasionally travels to Stumptown's New York roastery. Ability to occasionally work outside of standard business hours on an ad-hoc basis to address urgent business needs and support retail and marketing activities on weekends and evenings.
