Pay Range

$271,320 - $345,840 Annually

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.


Job Description

We have an opening for an Associate Division Leader (ADL) in the Materials Engineering Division (MED). MED is a multidisciplinary organization comprised of approximately 550 technical and administrative professionals, specializing in manufacturing, materials testing and characterization, nondestructive evaluation, precision engineering, photonics, bioengineering, and micro/nanotechnology. You will partner with the Division Leader and Deputy Division Leader to oversee personnel, financial, and operational resources within a $150 million organizational budget, and serve as the representative for the Division Leader in their absence. This position reports to the MED Division Leader and is within the Engineering Directorate.

Depending on your assignment, this position may offer a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You may have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

You will

  • Provide technical leadership, management, resource planning, budget development and administration, and support for core activities of the Division, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Participate as a member MED's senior leadership team, formulating and executing short-term and strategic programmatic technical and administrative goals to meet the needs of MED's customers.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and technical contributor/leader on large projects and special assignments, utilizing innovative approaches and technologies, as assigned by the Division Leader.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Center Leaders and MED Section Leaders to identify and manage staffing needs, work assignments, define work objectives, and ensure timely project reporting and feedback.
  • Lead and contribute to the development of the organization, key leaders, and a culture that embraces teamwork, and provides a professional work environment.
  • Foster continued interaction, coordination, and cooperation among a wide variety of internal technical and administrative entities and external organizations.
  • Provide direction in the overall conduct and coordination of Division personnel administration activities, including recruiting and hiring, training, performance management and review, reclassifications, salary management, transfers, and career development activities.
  • Mentor postdoctoral and early career engineers to develop innovative, relevant technologies and ensure their application to laboratory programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • Master's degree in Engineering or a related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Subject matter expert in one or more of the following areas: advanced manufacturing including additive manufacturing, advanced materials, materials testing and characterization, design and fabrication of micro and nanodevices, photonics, biodevices, precision systems.
  • Experience with and knowledge of major Laboratory programs and familiarity with Laboratory Science and Technology research funding processes, including LDRD and other non-programmatic funding sources.
  • Proven leadership and management experience within a diverse organization comprised of engineers, technical staff, and administrative professionals, including advanced level knowledge of supervision, personnel and performance management, staffing, and organizational development principles and methods applied in a technical area, including a strong understanding of administrative policies and procedures.
  • Extensive experience leading technical initiatives in an engineering or scientific discipline with knowledge of resource planning and control, project or program planning, budgeting, and scheduling.
  • Extensive experience identifying, prioritizing, and developing innovative solutions to resolve technical problems that are highly unusual, complex, and/or sensitive in nature.
  • Knowledge of facilities, operations, equipment acquisition, and safety and security protocols.
  • Expert communication, facilitation, organizational, collaboration, and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a multidisciplinary environment, to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and external sponsors.

Qualifications We Desire

  • PhD in Engineering or a related discipline, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Understand quality management systems such as ISO 9001.
  • Broad understanding of LLNL programs and relationships to MED personnel and capabilities.
  • Knowledge and understanding of sponsors/partnerships industry/govt. external funding sources.
