Summary:

The Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing research-based education, assistance, and support to breastfeeding mothers and infants in the Lactation Center through in-person visits, phone consultations, or on an outpatient basis. Provides appropriate follow-up assistance as needed. Helps coordinate with physicians and Women's Services to assure continuity of care. Assists in staff training to ensure accurate and consistent information is disseminated to all Associates as applicable. Teaches breastfeeding classes as needed. Coordinates breast pump rental and retail services.

  • Assists in reviewing/revising policies and procedures as needed.
  • Maintains current certification.
  • Participates in ministry and community activities that promote goodwill and public awareness about breastfeeding.
  • Meets the needs of patients/guests in a prompt, courteous manner based on collecting subjective and objective data, including social, cultural, and economic factors obtained from clients, families, Associates, and physicians.
  • Informs supervisor of any unusual problem or need.
  • Provides telephone consults, post-partum lactation consults, and post-partum baby weight checks.
  • Maintains documentation of all consultations and provides follow-up care as needed. Completes verbal and or written communication with primary care providers.
  • Attends department/unit meetings.
  • Promotes Great Expectations classes.
  • Works directly with the Parenting Program to provide lactation consults to their clients.
  • Maintains all lactation supplies, including ordering, inventory, sales, and record-keeping.
  • Maintains invoicing of all clients renting equipment, with follow-up on payments, refunds on deposits, etc.
  • Ensures all returned rental equipment is appropriately sanitized for quality control.
  • Creates all Lactation departmental monthly financial reports as needed.
  • Prepares and presents annual lactation competencies to Women's Services staff.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, initiative, and attention to detail.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education/Skills
* High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience
* Prior experience as a lactation consultant in a hospital setting is preferred.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
* IBCLC (International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant) certification is required.
* BLS (Basic Life Support) required.
