In the Heart of Inland Southern California, UC Riverside is located on nearly 1,200 acres near Box Springs Mountain in Southern California; the park-like campus provides convenient access to the vibrant and growing Inland region. The campus is a living laboratory for the exploration of issues critical to growing communities' air, water, energy, transportation, politics, the arts, history, and culture. POSITION OVERVIEW

Position Title: Community Interpreter: Part-Time UNEX Instructor

Salary Range: A reasonable estimate for this position is: $600 per unit. This is

a 4-unit course. Plus, an approximate $100 per unit as a course development fee

(payable for the first time the course is taught in each modality)

Anticipated Start: Summer 2025

Location: Online

University Extension is in search of practitioners to deliver university-developed curriculum for the Continuing and Professional Education division of the University of California, Riverside, which offers over 80 programs and certificates to domestic and international students. This is a continuous recruitment for part-time instructors to teach courses in University Extension's Professional Certificate in Interpretation and Translation: English/Spanish program, to adult learners. The Professional Certificate in Interpretation and Translation: English/Spanish resides in the Professional Programs Department. This program prepares individuals to enter into the professional field of interpreting and formal translation.

Courses are 4-7 weeks in length, average 3-6 teaching hours per week. Courses in this program are offered as synchronous online courses. Typically scheduled in the early evenings, usually starting after 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. All courses are currently being offered in a distance learning format (online).

Courses include:



  • The US Court System: An Overview for Legal Interpreters
  • Introduction to Legal Interpretation
  • Professional Interpreting: Protocol and Ethics
  • Community Interpretation
  • Community Interpretation and Translation in Education


RESPONSIBLITIES



  • Provide instruction in accordance with the established instructional agreement, curriculum outlines, and class schedules provided by University Extension.
  • Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students and clearly outline the grading policies to the course.
  • Work in conjunction with collaborative partners and subject matter experts in order to ensure that course information is current.
  • Participate in scheduled orientations, meetings, and mandatory training programs by UCR's established deadlines.
  • Create course shell, maintain timely and accurate academic records within the learning management system and submit timely and accurate documentation as outlined in the instructional agreement.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct.


REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications



  • Five years of experience as a community interpreter or a Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years of related work experience in community interpretation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational
    skills.
  • Must possess technical aptitude to provide instruction in an online format
    (Canvas and Zoom).
  • Commitment to diversity and the University's mission.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience teaching adult learners.
  • Experience with curriculum development and course design.
  • Experience teaching online courses using Canvas.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.

Instructional agreements are made on a course-by-course basis at the discretion of the University with no guarantee to teach future courses. This part-time position has no benefits but participates in the University of California Defined Contribution Plan.
