The inpatient hospice clinical supervisor (supervisor) is responsible for the direct/indirect nursing supervision of nurses, home health aides, and other members of the hospice team. The supervisor coordinates staff scheduling and maintains staff productivity standards. They have the authority to authorize necessary overtime and the responsibility to be involved in budget planning and program development. The supervisor is also involved in the hiring, orientation, and training of all team staff and acts as a resource for the team. Working under the direction of the Home Care Services clinical operations manager, the supervisor participates in interprofessional problem-solving activities, performance improvement initiatives, and plays a key role in ensuring compliance standards are met which includes performing competency visits with staff, as well as completing annual performance evaluations.
Supervisor must be a registered nurse and is responsible for the operation of the nursing unit over a specific time period. The supervisor must have a strong foundation of clinical knowledge with an emphasis in end-of-life care and skills on which to base judgments and make decisions, organizing abilities to direct nursing tasks/operations, and interpersonal skills to facilitate communication and the work of others. The supervisor accepts the responsibility for, and is accountable for, their own nursing practice. The supervisor also seeks out and pursues opportunities for learning and assumes responsibility for their own self-development.
Fundamental responsibilities for the supervisor include planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit nursing and other clinical activities to ensure interprofessional, collaborative care is provided to the whole patient and caregiver's needs. Additionally, the supervisor identifies and implements nursing interventions and evaluates results for a wide variety of patient populations, directs and acts as a resource to other members of the hospice team as assigned, and promotes compliance and support for policies.
As a leader within UC Davis Health, the supervisor helps support patients throughput by collaborating with inpatient and ambulatory stakeholders, and is expected to creatively manage challenging clinical situations to ensure exceptional hospice care while in the hospital and when transitioning to home.

Qualifications

- Required to hold valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.
- American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing/BSN
- At least 3 years of recent Inpatient Hospice RN experience
- At least 6 months of recent RN experience in a hospice leadership role
- Must demonstrate ability in assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care, taking into consideration protective interventions, development (behavioral and physical), and physiological characteristics specific to the patients.

Department Overview
The Home Care Services (HCS) department is made up of three primary programs: Hospice (inpatient and home care), Home Health, and Home-Based Palliative Care. This position is part of the Hospice Program (inpatient).
Nurses provide care to patients ranging in age from pediatrics through geriatrics and have a large variety of medical needs. Patient conditions may include both acute and chronic conditions spanning across many care specialty areas. The focus of the nurses in home care is providing patient-centered care by supporting patient and caregiver's goals.
Department Specific Job Scope
The primary responsibilities for this position consist of providing total, comprehensive, continuous, and patient-centered care which includes assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive hospice plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties; and adhering to university policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.
Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with American Nurses' Association Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.

Work Environment
