Job Summary

The LCT project consists of the move the Leighton Telescope of the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory to the Caltech-CBI site on the Chajnantor Plateau in Chile, inside the site of the ALMA Observatory, including the design and installation of site infrastructure and a new enclosure and the recommissioning of the telescope and instruments. The LCT PM will have responsibility for the overall planning and organization of the project, including the preparation of budgets and schedules for review and approval by the LCT Consortium leadership, which consists of Sunil Golwala (Caltech), Zhong Wang (Chinese Academy of Sciences South American Center for Astronomy), Chenggang Shu (Shanghai Normal University), and Rodrigo Reeves (Universidad de Concepcion). The LCT PM will report directly to Golwala.

Essential Job Duties

  • Maintaining and updating the existing project budget and schedule.
  • Managing all engineering work for the LCT project by the LCT partner engineering teams at UdeC, the Nanjing Astronomical Instrument Research Center (NAIRC, mediated by ShNU), and other contribution institutions, including design of a new enclosure, modifications to the telescopedrive control system, refurbishment of other aspects of the telescope, and design of a foundation for the telescope and enclosure at the new site.
  • Managing all civil work relevant for the project such as installation or updating of site infrastructure for access, power, communications, and safety.
  • Managing the transportation of the Leighton Telescope and associated equipment from Hawaii to the San Pedro site in Chile, including handling export compliance issues, as well as from San Pedro to the final LCT site on the Chajnantor Plateau. Working with procurement and contracting teams at the various institutions, as deemed appropriate by the LCT Consortium leads, to prepare requests for proposals and solicit bids for work related to the LCT project.
  • Management of documentation, including curation of the team's internal documentation facilities such as its web site, as well as preparation of documentation where appropriate.
  • Organization of team presentations for external reviews of the project deemed necessary by the LCT Consortium leadership or their institutions or funding agencies.
  • Working with LCT Consortium leadership to manage interactions with other entities such as ALMA, the Chilean Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation, and the Chajnantor Working Group. and any other responsibilities arrived at by mutual agreement of the LCT PM and the LCT Consortium leadership.
  • Ultimate responsibility for the project is held by the LCT Consortium leads above, not by the PM, and so all major project decisions will require review by the Consortium leads, either via informal review at weekly meetings or via a more formal review process. The LCT PM will be charged with executing those approved decisions, with authority to spend funds and manage workforce provided via Consortium members.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or a related field.
  • 10 years experience as a working engineer in a related field -- civil engineering, mechanical, electrical engineering, or similar.
  • 10 years experience in management of international scientific projects, preferably involving astronomy.
  • Facility with simple project management software tools such as Microsoft Excel, GanttProject or similar.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience on telescope deconstruction, relocation, and reconstruction.

Hiring Range

$150,000 - $220,000 Per Year

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
