Position Summary:

Solid waste incinerator operators control processes and equipment to destroy by incineration municipal, infectious, pathogenic, and biological wastes as permitted in solid waste incinerators. The incumbent will maintain and operate the incinerator and related equipment necessary for the proper functioning of the disposal system.

Position Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain operation records including by not limited to, tonnages accepted, and quantities of ash disposed of via Special Waste Authorization.
  • Read and interpret data from various meters and/or gauges which monitor the equipment's operation.
  • Inspect loads of incoming waste.
  • Waste pickups.
  • Safe operation of pressure rated vessel.
  • Knowledge of proper recycling material disposal methods.
  • Maintain cleanliness of Incinerator area.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks as required.

Education and Experience:

  • An applicant must have completed, or able to complete within three (3) months, a basic training course approve by the Department of Natural resources. The required basic training course must be preapproved and have at least 12 contact hours. At a minimum, the course will address the following:
    • Description of types of wastes.
    • Incinerator design.
    • Incinerator operations.
    • Environmental monitoring.
    • Applicable laws and regulations.
    • Permitting process.
    • Ash and residue disposal.
  • Applicant must obtain an Iowa Incinerator Operator Certification within 60 days of hire.
  • An applicant must be able to complete ten contact hours of continuing education during a two-year period for certification renewal.

Technical Skills Requirements:

Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.

  • Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to, lifting materials (up to 75 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing, or walking.
  • Must be able to handle hazardous materials safely.
  • Must be able to tolerate working temperatures ranging from -10F to 100F.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to walk or stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to reach above shoulder level, bend/stoop, kneel, push/pull, and handle/grip frequently.
  • Must be able to work scheduled 40 hours with the ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of 5 to 25 lbs.
  • Regular reaching, bending, stooping, and twisting.
  • Repetitive motion and substantial movement of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in environments with extreme temperature (hot /cold) & humidity, with limited lighting and in crowded spaces. The noise of these work environments are typical office noises.
