Essential Job Duties |
The purpose of this position is to conduct repeated surveys of pollinator communities at wildflower pollinator habitat in agricultural areas that were impacted by recent and historical flooding. Primary duties will include travelling to field-sites around the state, collecting insect specimens, curating and preserving collected specimens for subsequent analyses, and using morphological identification techniques to identify specimens to genus and species. Because field sites are distributed through North Carolina, the candidate must be willing and able to travel relatively extensively on 8-13 day trips each month, during which the candidate may be expected to drive off road, walk long distances, and haul insect collecting equipment (e.g. coolers, nets, and vials). Main period of outdoor activity is from May-September with peak effort in June-August. Candidates are expected to work both outside (in hot, humid conditions) and inside (in a lab). Candidates will be working closely with stinging insects, so stinging is a possibility. Knowledge of and preparedness for allergic reaction to stinging required.
In addition to collection and curation, the candidate may be asked to assist in the preparation of educational documents and materials for extension and outreach activities, such as collection guides, identification brochures, summary speeches on collection outcomes and site characteristics, and similar.
Work Schedule: 30-40 hours a week, typically M-F during business hours, but the candidate will be expected to work extended days and weekends as necessary. Disruptions due to weather or other unexpected circumstances may require work to be rescheduled to weekends. |
