GENERAL SUMMARY:The Technical Specialist oversees technical aspects of the section, providing the expertise required to maintain precise and accurate determinations. The Technical Specialist works in a daily, operational testing environment and is responsible for the researching of new tests within the specific areas of their expertise, the application of these tests, and the adoption to routine performance. Performs required validation studies. Coordinates laboratory section training and in-service programs to maintain and upgrade competency at the level required as procedures are changed or added. Ensures compliance with accreditation agencies which includes: The college of American Pathologists, Food and Drug Administration, FACT, Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies, New York State, Joint Commission, Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency. Functions as quality assurance/quality control coordinator as requested. Writes policies and procedures. Assists the laboratory manager in evaluating additions to the test menu, provides budget input, and cost management related to laboratory supplies and instrumentation. Performs general maintenance of transfusion and Donor LIS. Supports laboratory testing services by performing specimen collection and processing, quality control and maintenance functions, and results reporting and verification. Works collaboratively with the Operational Supervisor in achieving efficient laboratory operation. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. . Licensed or eligible (application pending with a limited license in effect) as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York. 2. Employees with a limited license must obtain full license within New York State guidelines.3. Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology (hospital-based formal internship required) OR Bachelor's Degree in related science from an accredited college with subsequent relevant clinical laboratory experience for one year. 4. Degree must include sufficient science and math credits to meet minimum NYSDOH requirements for a Technologist.5. ASCP, NCA or equivalent certification is highly recommended. Minimum four (4) years experience as a Medical Technologist with at least two (2) of those years in a Blood Bank setting required. 6. Must meet New York State requirements under NTCRR Part 58-1As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of patients for which care is being provided. |
