Job Description

Position Summary:

NRECA is a unique national trade association providing advocacy, financial services and business support services to over 900 consumer owned electric cooperatives across the country. NRECA's Finance department manages the accounting, financial planning/budgeting, and procurement operations across a broad range of entities and businesses that support NRECA and its affiliated organizations, trusts, and other entities. We are a team of dynamic individuals collaborating across NRECA to implement best practices and provide innovative business solutions. We enable the good stewardship of member funds across NRECA by diligently embracing our core values of transparency and fiscal responsibility.

We are looking for a manager of corporate accounting to supervise a team of professionals who are responsible for monthly operations, including but not limited to, general accounting, financial reporting, and tax preparation functions of various entities within NRECA's organizational structure. This position manages the monthly financial close through the timely and accurate completion of accounting journal entries, ledger account reconciliations, financial statements and tax filings. Oversees corporate payroll and benefits payments for NRECA's multiple employee retirement plans.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages the activities of the team by ensuring the integrity of internal controls and work products of the team related to applicable NRECA departments and subsidiaries.
  • Manages the month-end closing process by 1) ensuring the preparation and timely delivery of accurate monthly financial statements, 2) reviewing and ensuring timely completion of accurate monthly and periodic balance sheet reconciliations, 3) reviewing and approving journal entries.
  • In coordination with Controller, prepares and directs preparation of accurate tax and other government filings for NRECA and ensures required deadlines are met.
  • Ensures the accuracy and timely completion of auditor requests.
  • Directs the preparation of/prepares the annual audited financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Oversees the treasury function by monitoring activity, cash balances and investments.
  • Ensures timely preparation of accurate bank reconciliations.
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP and FASB standards for transaction processing and financial reporting by researching and implementing updates.
  • Participates in implementation/maintenance of new financial systems or new features/modules within existing systems.
Qualifications

Qualifications;

Formal Education Required

Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field

Experience and Certifications Required:

  • 6 years of progressive accounting experience
  • 2 or more years of leading projects or programs, or supervising accounting staff in a direct or matrixed environment
  • CPA or CMA preferred; and prior experience in a CPA firm preferred
  • Experience using automated general ledger systems; Workday preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required (as demonstrated by prior work experience):

  • Deep knowledge of GAAP/FASB Accounting Standards and their application.
  • Must possess strong leadership skills and the ability to be persuasive, while being open to new ideas.
  • Ability to collaborate and engage with individuals at all levels throughout organization.
  • Ability to organize and manage time, multi-task, operate under pressure and prioritize projects for oneself and direct reports.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in the execution of all duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse membership, co-workers, and third-party vendors in a clear and precise manner.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point) and to operate various office equipment such as personal computer, copier, printer, fax machine or other job-related equipment.
  • Ability to provide service excellence by building relationships, being resourceful, responsive, and respectful.
  • Ability to report to the office when required.

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading.
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
