Position Summary

This position will be a key contributor in the Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) organization and will develop a comprehensive understanding of capacity expansion & production cost modeling, financial concepts, regulatory filing development, and system operations. This position will be a member of the IRP Modeling team, applying complex modeling techniques and analysis to deliver technical expertise in support of jurisdictional plans across the regulated enterprise, including Duke Energy Indiana, Duke Energy Kentucky, Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress, and Duke Energy Florida.

Examples of regulatory and corporate external filings supported include Carolinas Carbon Plans, Integrated Resource Plans, Ten Year Site Plans, Avoided Cost Filings, Certificates of Public Convenience and Necessity, Impact Reports, and Climate Reports.

Areas of modeling and analytic responsibilities include, but are not limited to: development of generation resource plans to achieve Duke Energy's Net Zero goals; detailed analysis of potential new generation projects including gas, nuclear, renewables, and storage technologies; evaluation of the impacts of emerging federal or state regulatory issues; economic validation of power plant upgrade options; integration of generation resource planning with transmission planning; and development of existing power plant retirement schedules.

In addition to generation planning support, this position will gain an understanding of zonal power flow modeling to forecast the regional impact on power prices within our regulated service territories. Dependent upon qualifications, this position may also support the use of a DC nodal power flow model to determine areas of congestion and siting of new generation.

Responsibilities

Provide technical support for long-term capacity expansion plans, system operation simulations to provide production costs, and other modeling projects with a variety of deliverables including financial assessment, unit performance, and system emissions.

Communicate and present results of complex modeling analyses in a clear, understandable manner to promote efficient development of IRPs and other deliverables.

Interface in regulatory processes and stakeholder engagement in support of the jurisdictional IRP teams, publicly representing the company's interests professionally.

Support coordination and implementation of the Planning Model Database by incorporating inputs into long-term planning software to facilitate accurate projections of existing and new assets. Requires collaboration and timely communication with internal stakeholders, including data providers and output recipients.

Dependent upon qualifications, this position may provide technical and project support for development and implementation of zonal power flow modeling to forecast regional LMPs.

Basic / Required Qualifications:

Planning Analyst

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or other related degree
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience.

Senior Planning Analyst

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or other related degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience
Desired Qualifications
  • Expertise in analytical, problem solving and financial evaluation skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Expertise in power plant operations
  • Industry experience in the areas of energy efficiency and renewable resources
  • Experience in the fuels, transmission, forecasting or other department directly related to resource planning
  • Production cost modeling and/or expansion plan modeling for vertically integrated utilities
  • Experience with the development and maintenance of SharePoint sites.
Working Conditions
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
