Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Facilities Division has an opening for a Custodian - Floor Crew (Swing Shift) to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will be responsible for maintaining premises and work areas in a clean and orderly manner and perform most assignments under direct supervision with instructions as to the results expected. This position determines methods, procedures, equipment and material, best suited for the operation to be performed. What You Will Do:
- Strip, wax, and polish floors; operate buffing, scrubbing, and polishing machines
- Clean walls, ceilings, windows, moldings, doors, and Venetian blinds. Vacuum, shampoo, extract and spot clean carpets and upholstery.
- Ensure safety in all tasks, recognizing hazardous operations and conditions. Follow safety procedures and report hazards immediately.
- Comply with DOE health and safety policies, and local environmental, fire, and safety regulations.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and stop work if there is a risk to people or property, notifying the supervisor or relevant department.
- Adhere to safety policies and procedures for hazardous activities. Maintain logs and equipment records.
- Complete required training on time and arrive to work punctually.
- Wear PPE and steel-toed, or composite toe safety shoes at all times.
- Monitor email for Activity Manager notifications and complete training before expiration.
- Submit weekly timesheets on time via LETS (by end of shift on Thursday).
- Follow instructions from Manager, Supervisors, and Work Lead.
- Maintain organized and stocked storage areas for the floor crew.
- Complete daily work as scheduled and follow the Integrated Safety Management System (ISM).
- Attend weekly safety huddles and bi-weekly Custodial Safety Meetings.
- Report safety issues to supervisor or work lead.
- Keep supervisor informed of changes to work routine or emergency situations.
- Follow the Lab's cellular phone and time-off policies.
- Report illness per department procedures and plan time off in advance.
- Uphold LBNL's Stewardship Values and comply with all policies and procedures.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
- Perform cleaning and custodial duties in an assigned area, including but not limited to:
- Sweeping, mopping, and dusting.
- Clean, disinfect, and maintain restrooms, showers, and washrooms, including replenishing supplies.
- Empty and clean waste receptacles and dispose of trash.
- Dust, clean, and polish furniture, woodwork, chalkboards, ventilators, and equipment.
- Clean ductwork and pipe, clean air diffuser.
- Performs special cleaning projects as assigned.
What is Required:
- Demonstrated related - qualifications acquired either in a formal apprenticeship or directly-related vocational training or equivalent custodial - floor work experience.
- Ability to communicate (read, write, speak) in English in writing, orally, over the telephone, and by two way radio with Supervisor, work leads, peers, and customers regarding work assignments/safety issues.
- Ability to follow oral and written policies, procedures, and instructions. Ability to read and comply with posted safety warnings.
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to promote customer relations through partnering with customers and colleagues.
- Ability to climb stairs, work at heights; work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under florescent lights; able to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, have manual dexterity in both hands; lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted to chest height and carry object up to 100 feet up/down stairs. Ability to stand for long periods of time (up to 8 hours).
- Experience working as part of a team in a diverse work environment within all levels of the organization.
- Ability to make sound decisions using problem solving and analysis skills necessary for the role and scope of work performed.
Desired Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to use computers and applicable software effectively for record keeping and communication is desirable.
- Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
Notes:
- This is a full-time, career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid)
- This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
- Salary range $22.38 - $32.57/hourly depending on the step you will be hired at.
- Swing shift hours 3pm - 11:30 pm
- Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements step rates.
