This position performs technical assignments of moderate difficultly in drafting, surveying, mapping, recordkeeping and other miscellaneous work in the office and field.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM
Salary range: $51,126.12 - $71,693.88

Essential Job Functions The job functions listed herein are neither exclusive nor exhaustive but are intended to be illustrative of the types of tasks the employee will most likely be expected to perform on a regular basis. The employee may be asked to perform different or additional tasks than the ones listed here, as the needs of the employer and/or the requirements of the position change.

May perform some or all of the following tasks:
General:

  1. Makes limited detailed review of specific portions of Public Works projects or materials while serving as a Construction Site Representative ; reviews construction materials for quality and conformance to specifications.
  2. Oversees the construction of projects including but not limited to new and reconstructed streets and new or rehabilitated underground utilities (sanitary sewer, storm sewer, street lights and traffic signals) being performed under City contracts.
  3. Serves on-call for 7 days approximately every 7 weeks to field locate Diggers hotline requests
  4. Assists with snow/ice and other right-of-way obstruction inspection and enforcement.
  5. Conducts field work and office computations to obtain traffic counts.
  6. Assists in material delivery and setup for city-wide elections.
  7. Communicates with property owners regarding work being done on their property; helps property owners resolve problems within the City's right of way.
  8. Assists with general office work; processes mail, etc.
  9. Assist in the enforcement of City Ordinances related to the removal of snow on sidewalk and removal of overgrown trees and bushes in City Right of Way.
  10. May coordinate work of Engineering interns/co-ops.
Survey:
  1. Serves as a member of a field survey crew; operates survey instruments and equipment including GPS, total station, data collector, level and a variety of hand tools. Gathers and lays out survey data, including topological and design data for Public Works projects.
  2. Uploads and downloads survey and design data. Computes, coordinates, and sets up design point database files for Public Work construction projects.
  3. Makes mathematical calculations for grades and surveys.
  4. Assists Engineers and/or other Engineer Technicians in the performance of field studies and surveys.
GIS/Drafting:
  1. Develops moderately involved AutoCAD Civil 3d drawings for Public Works projects; including initial Civil 3D project setup, importing survey points, surface creation/manipulation, construction stakeout point creation, point exporting, and other specific tasks as assigned.
  2. Enters storm sewer, sanitary sewer and other City infrastructure data into GIS utilizing ESRI ArcGIS Pro Software. This will include interpreting as-built plans from City or private development projects and may require additional coordination with Engineer or other Tech staff.




Requirements of Work
Associates Degree in surveying, engineering / construction technology or closely related field plus 1 to 3 years or technical or specialized training; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills:

Knowledge of

  • Public Works Construction techniques and procedures.
  • Computer aided drafting (AutoCAD).
  • Mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
  • The use of field surveying equipment, knowledge of surveying best practices and procedures and mathematics.
  • The use of standard office equipment including computers and relevant software programs.
Ability to
  • Prepare and interpret difficult drawings, plans, graphs, charts, maps and specifications.
  • Understand and follow instructions.
  • Work independently.
  • Perform clerical and routine statistical work.
  • Perform moderate to heavy physical tasks under varying weather conditions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, engineers, supervisors, coworkers and the general public.
Skill in
  • The use and care of drafting software and equipment and basic construction reporting equipment.
  • The use and care of field surveying equipment.
  • Oral and written communications.
Necessary Special Requirements
  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license.
