Contingent Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant - Cardiovascular ICU - (JACKSON, MI)

Position Summary:

This is an Advanced Practice Professional (APP) job opening. Will admit all postoperative cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) patients who require critical care services, as well as patients from those services requiring heightened oversight in a 'step down' unit.



  • Anticipated initial census of 6-8 patients
  • 2-4 ICU status
  • 4-6 step down status


CVICU service to sign off when patients are deemed floor status.

Expected census to expand as surgical volume grows.

Advanced Practice Professional will provide health care and specialized health services to patients and families enrolled in Cardiovascular ICU Medicine. The APP will provide care of this patient population in collaboration with all members of the health care team. This position will be 100% inpatient with 100% Adult Case Load. ICU management/experience preferred (as an RN or APP), new graduates will be reviewed. NO FNP

The CVICU team's goal is to provide 24/7 in-house coverage for its own patients. APPs expected shifts are 6x12-hour shifts per 2 week pay period.



  • Daytime coverage - CVICU APPs will work 12-hour shifts, 630a-630p with evening sign out at 630p
  • Nighttime coverage - SICU APPs will cross cover at night, 630p-630a

- Independently evaluates patients in the hospital

- Works closely with CVICU physicians, Surgeons, and Interventional Cardiology

- Ordering/interpreting testing and lab results, modifying plan of care to address results

- Provide clinical expertise and direction to support patient management

- Maintain accurate documentation regarding patient status, evaluations, and treatments to physicians, streamline the patient transfer process between levels of care, including communicating specific patient needs to internal and external team members and other healthcare providers

- Perform other related duties as required to assure patient safety and satisfaction

- Participate in the development and presentation of educational experiences for patients, families, and health care professionals

Procedures - procedural lines, chest tubes, a-lines, etc.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. In collaboration with physician(s), APP will provide independent acute and/or routine medical care to a patients and families enrolled in Cardiovascular Medicine

2. Manages appropriate orders

3. Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods

4. Coordinates the activities of patient care and support staff within the setting

5. Creates progress notes in EMR indicating patient status and treatment procedures performed

6. Provides health education to patients, families, and/or community health practitioners and groups

7. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops

8. May perform clinical research related to specific operations

9. Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures

2. Knowledge of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration

3. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards

GENERAL SUMMARY: The NP/PA-Critical Care/ICU will work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary critical care unit. The NP/PA-Critical Care/ICU will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, education, consultation, and care coordination as a first line provider to critically ill patients and their families. Provides inpatient medical care for critically ill patients requiring ICU level of care. Works in collaboration with intensivist physicians, attending physicians, consultants, house officers, nurses, and other members of the medical care team to ensure that patient outcomes are achieved safely and efficiently. Specific procedures as per credentialing as indicated by training and experience. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Masters degree in nursing OR Bachelors degree or Completion of an AMA-approved Physician Assistant program minimum. CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED: Current certification as a Certified Nurse Practitioner. Current state license as a Registered Nurse. Current ACLS/BLS as required. Current ATLS/PALS provider status as required. OR Michigan licensure and continued certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA). Current ACLS/BLS as required. Current ATLS/PALS provider status as required.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Education/Training

1. NP - Completion of an accredited Acute Care Nurse Practitioner training program

OR

PA - Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant training program

Continuing Education

2. Applicant must have sufficient education credits to maintain licensure as required by the applicable State of Michigan licensing board

Certification

3. NP - Certification by a certification body recognized by the State of Michigan

4. PA - Certification by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)

Other

5. Michigan License, or in process of applying (must have proof of application)

6. ICU management/experience preferred

Qualifications:

1. Education/Training

a. NP - Completion of a NP training program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education (CCNE) or the national League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)

b. PA - Completion of a PA training program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the PA (ARC-PA)

a. NP - Certification by a certification body recognized by the State of Michigan

4. DEA/CSL as required through credentialing
