In September, Sonoco announced it is performing a strategic review of the Thermoforming Flexible Packaging (TFP) business unit. In order to support a newly formed global packaging company with annual revenues exceeding $1 billion, we are seeking a Manager, Global Sustainability will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to support or enhance the company's overall sustainability goals related to flexible and thermoformed packaging with the objective to drive growth.
This role involves collaborating cross-functionally with Sales, Technology, Supply Management, and others, staying informed of industry trends and policies, conveying relevant information to external and internal stakeholders, and collaborating externally with trade organizations and other organizations.
What you'll be doing:
  • Work with the commercial and technical leads to develop, recommend, and implement sustainability strategies based on customers' and market goals.

  • Monitor Americas policy and regulation changes and provide updates and guidance on any potential impacts to the company.

  • Build and manage relationship with industry organizations such as AMERIPEN, Association of Plastic Recyclers, Sustainable Packaging Coalition, and others.

  • Represent the company at industry conferences, events, and trade shows.

  • Educate and train internal and external teams on sustainable packaging practices and trends.

  • Support Technology in conducting relevant third-party testing (e.g., Critical Guidance, composability, repulpability, etc.).

  • Manage all How2Recycle applications for prequalification letters, maintain associated documentation, and notify internal and external teams of status updates.

  • Stay current on sustainable packaging trends and emerging technologies for all material formats, including technologies of sorting and processing, to ensure the company is at the forefront of sustainable packaging design.

  • Support / Conduct life cycle assessments (LCAs) to evaluate the environmental impact of packaging options.

  • Educate customers on the sustainability benefits of packaging supplied by the company and how the structures will help meet the customers' goals or needs. Complete customer surveys or other requested related to Sustainability.

  • Engage with suppliers to understand their sustainable offerings and provide recommendations to the technology team.

  • Develop relationships with peers at customers, retailers, and suppliers.

This position is located out of our Charlotte, NC Office (Uptown Area)

We'd love to hear from you if:

  • Bachelor's degree in Sustainability, Packaging Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years in a role with relevant sustainability or consumer packaging experience
  • Strong knowledge of sustainable packaging materials, technologies, and regulations.
  • Having an existing strong network and working relationship in the industry as it relates to Sustainability would be highly preferred.
  • Experience with life cycle assessment (LCA) and other sustainability assessment tools
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams

Compensation:

The annual base salary range for this role is from $151,040 to $169,920, plus an annual target bonus of 14.5% base salary.
