This 8-week paid apprenticeship is focused on hands-on training, real-world experience, and learning from industry experts. You'll be assigned to either Water & Sewer or Streets & Drainage, gaining valuable skills while helping to keep Allen a safe and beautiful place to live.

The following duties are NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all listed duties and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

• Support the maintenance and improvement of city infrastructure by assisting with a wide range of field operations, including water line repairs, street maintenance, and drainage system cleaning. Apprentices will gain practical experience by working alongside skilled crews and participating in essential services that ensure the safety and functionality of the community.

• Develop proficiency in the safe and effective use of tools, machinery, and specialized equipment under the guidance of experienced staff. Apprentices will learn industry-standard practices related to tool operation, job site safety, and the use of protective gear to ensure safe and efficient work performance.

• Participate in outdoor fieldwork under various weather conditions, adapting to the demands of physical labor and environmental factors. Apprentices will gain firsthand knowledge of what it takes to work in the elements while maintaining productivity and safety standards.

• Adhere to safety protocols and operational procedures designed to protect team members and the public. Apprentices will complete safety training and be expected to follow best practices that align with city, state, and federal regulations.

• Engage in structured training sessions and work-based learning activities to build foundational skills and earn relevant certifications. These opportunities will prepare apprentices for future employment in public works and related trades.

• The work schedule follows a 4-day, 10-hour workweek, with assignments scheduled on Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday, depending on departmental needs.

Education and Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• High School diploma or equivalent
• No prior relevant work experience is required

• Valid Texas driver's license.
• Must be 18 years or older.
• Eligibility to work in the United States; the City of Allen does not sponsor work visas

Knowledge of:

• Basic safety procedures and practices related to maintenance and construction work.
• Proper use and care of hand tools, power tools, and equipment used in field operations.
• General maintenance techniques related to water systems, street repair, and drainage.

• Demonstrating a strong work ethic and willingness to learn new tasks.
• Following written and verbal instructions in a fast-paced work environment.
• Working as part of a team to complete physically demanding tasks.
• Maintaining a positive and professional attitude in public service settings.
• Operating basic tools and equipment safely and efficiently.
• Applying safety principles to protect oneself and others during daily tasks.
• Communicating clearly and respectfully with coworkers and supervisors.

• Ability to lift heavy objects, dig, bend, and perform physically strenuous work.
• Requires working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
• May involve exposure to loud noise, dust, and other environmental elements.
