The Center for Gender & Sexuality Law seeks an Associate Research Scholar to lead the Center's work on reproductive rights for the Law, Rights, and Religion Project. Under the supervision of the Center's Faculty Director, the Associate Research Scholar will:
- conduct independent research and publish white papers, articles, and other materials on topics related to religious liberty and reproductive rights, health, and justice;
- be responsible for developing and executing LRRP's work regarding faith and abortion access, including providing guidance and thought leadership, conducting original research, writing amicus briefs, policy papers, and reports, and educating policymakers, lawyers, faith leaders, and the public about religious liberty and reproductive rights;
- research and write on emerging issues at the intersection of religion, law, and reproduction. This may include amicus briefs, reports, policy analyses, model litigation materials, or educational materials for legal and non-legal audiences;
- develop and maintain relationships with a wide variety of strategic partners including national reproductive rights organizations, church/state and religious freedom organizations, local abortion funds and practical support organizations, clergy and faith groups, private litigators, academics, and others; and
- engage in public conversations about religious liberty and reproductive freedom through media appearances, public speaking engagements, social media, and publication of op-eds and other popular press articles.
This is a 12-month position, with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding.
- J.D., J.D equivalent, or LLM.
- Strong academic qualifications and a familiarity with reproductive rights and/or religious liberty law and policy strongly preferred.
- Candidates should have excellent writing, research, analytic, leadership and communication skills, and be able to work well with a team.
- 3-5+ years of professional legal experience doing legal/policy work on religious liberty and/or reproductive rights and justice with an NGO, law firm, or law school center.
