Summary:

The Media Relations Manager will lead HHMI's engagement with media organizations, balancing proactive outreach and responsive strategies. With deep experience in media relations, they excel at identifying, shaping, and pitching compelling stories about scientists, scientific research, research organizations, and education programs that align with reporters' interests. They assess media value, positioning HHMI's mission within the broader news landscape. They believe in the transformative power of scientific research and education. They bring strong media expertise and technical proficiency.

This position will report to HHMI Headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD, three days a week in person and work two days remotely.

What you'll do:

  • Develop and implement media strategies in collaboration with HHMI leadership and staff.

  • Manage media inquiries, working with leadership and the Director of Leadership Communications and External Relations to craft strategic responses and engage regularly with reporters.

  • Monitor, analyze, and circulate relevant media coverage.

  • Identify and pitch timely, compelling HHMI stories to various media outlets, including traditional publications, podcasts, and emerging digital platforms.

  • Optimize workflows to evaluate and share news, story leads, and insights across HHMI's communications efforts.

  • Collaborate with social media and communications teams to creatively promote HHMI's research, support community engagement, and highlight scientific discoveries.

  • Write clear, scientifically accurate media materials, including pitches, news releases, backgrounders, and op-eds.

  • Explore and leverage non-traditional media platforms to expand HHMI's reach and engagement.

  • Supervise freelance writers in producing original content for web and social media, including news releases and program announcements.

  • Contribute to reports, briefings, and presentations on HHMI initiatives.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree.

  • Five to seven years of experience in media relations. Experience in the government, major research universities, scientific nonprofits, or academic medical centers is strongly preferred.

  • Experience independently developing and executing media strategies, engaging with reporters, and pitching stories.

  • Deep understanding of digital and traditional media channels, audience targeting, and messaging strategies.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the flexibility to collaborate across all levels, from senior scientists to frontline staff, building trust and credibility.

  • Passionate about advancing nonprofit goals.

  • Strong judgment, decision-making, and a positive attitude for navigating a complex organization.

Compensation Range

$96,285.60 (minimum) - $120,357.00 (midpoint) - $156,464.10 (maximum)

Pay Type:

Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
