Position Description:
The School Director of the Excel Center drives the Goodwill mission to empower individuals, strengthen families, and build stronger communities through education. Specifically, through operating a rigorous high school for adult students to earn a high school diploma and workforce credential while receiving comprehensive wrap around supports from coaching staff as well as free child care and transportation. Provides a hands-on approach to leadership in directing, planning, managing, and coordinating the educational goals and vision of the school. Responsible for meeting desired outcomes in the areas of operations, curriculum, personnel management and development in accordance with the principles of an Excel Center. Accountability will be measured both internally and externally by state and local standards as well as ensuring fidelity to the (Indiana-based) Goodwill Excel Center National Office. Essential functions include supervision and management of teaching faculty and Team Members, creating and maintaining a safe and secure educational environment for up to 400 adult students and their children in Kids Excel. Oversees an operating budget of approximately $3M and is accountable for all financial activities of the school. The position will work with the Arizona Goodwill Education Services Governing Board in establishing school goals and objectives. Heavily involved with strategic planning within a fast-paced, constantly changing environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads the school team to provide a rigorous, relevant and relationship focused high school education for enrolled adult students and their children.
  • Drives the team, using data, to meet and exceed critical goals including graduating 25% of the student body annually with an Arizona High School Diploma while ensuring 100% of graduates receive dual credits and/or approved certifications.
  • Tracks school and student data to drive goals for improvement. Develops interventions and professional development in support of improvement goals.
  • Develops strategies and sets goals for recruitment and retention of students, including working closely with Kids Excel as a strategy for parents.
  • Assists faculty in setting priorities, facilitating meetings and developing their leadership skills.
  • Provides leadership in the development of new partnerships and/or methodologies in response to changing needs concerning students, test results, and/or Arizona Academic Standards.
  • Represents the school, as appropriate, in community planning and policy-making activities.
  • Works with the leadership team to ensure appropriate building management coverage for an Excel Center's hours of operation.
  • Builds and manages the annual school budget with support of SVP, Education Services.
  • Manages relationships and contracts with Goodwill Education Initiatives (associated with Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana).
  • Supports the Arizona Goodwill Education Services (AGES) Board of Directors through accurate and timely reporting and communications regarding school operations.
  • Represents GCNA, The Excel Center, AGES, and all other affiliated entities at various conferences and public events.
  • Supports school staff to thrive in their roles. This includes indirect supervision and support of school-based Team Members to ensure effective implementation of The National Excel Center model at current campus.
  • Manages the development and implementation of new career pathway certification and credentialing offerings for students at The Excel Center.
  • Ensures operational excellence and adherence to all mandated activities under the Charter agreement with the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools.
  • Supports the SVP of Education Services education-focused outreach and advocacy efforts.
  • As needed, travels for local meetings and site visits.
  • Attends all team and professional development meetings.
  • Plays a critical role in driving school and company culture change efforts and change management processes.
  • Responsible for performance management (coaching, discipline, performance improvement plans, and annual reviews), staffing, compensation, and development of Excel Center Team Members.
  • Maintains consistent presence on the school campus.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills):

  • Current Teaching Certification; ESL, Special Education, Dual Certification, and/or Principal certification preferred
  • 3 - 5 years of successful coaching or teaching experience
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to influence others in a proactive and strength-focused manner and bring about mission-focused change
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to develop a rigorous curriculum, scope and sequence, unit and lesson plans preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and coordinate processes and activities carried out by other individuals
  • Strong sense of professionalism, effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Valid driver's license and clean MVR
  • Ability to pass a background check, Online Arizona Certification Information System (OACIS) check, State Board of Education Disciplinary check, fingerprint clearance card check, and drug screen
  • Ability to speak and read English proficiently
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Social Work, or related field; Master's Degree strongly preferred
