Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. This position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

We Require

  • Bilingual skills in Spanish/English

  • One year of experience as a medical assistant

  • Medical Assistant Certificate of Completion from an accredited healthcare training program

  • High school diploma or GED

We Also Value

  • Phlebotomy certification

  • Basic Life Support Certification

  • Public Health or Community Health Worker certification from an accredited college or currently enrolled in a Public Health or Community Health Worker program and eligible to receive a certification within six months of hire

Job Contributions

  • Provides direct patient care, including patient data collection, specimen collection, communicable disease Provides Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) and Directly Observed Preventive Therapy (DOPT) medications to patients in the clinic, through video, or delivers medication to patients home, job, school, etc., and notifies the medical personnel of any patient complaints or problems

  • Collects specimens such as blood, urine, sputum, etc., from patients receiving care from one or more of the clinical programs of the division

  • Documents patient and family encounters in the prescribed medical records or encounter/reporting form

  • Performs certain medical procedures (i.e., tuberculin skin testing, etc.) under the direction of the medical director of the division

  • Gathers patient demographics and medical information to be used by the physician to determine the individual's prescribed treatment regimen

  • Assists medical personnel in the clinic with collecting specimens as ordered and prepping patients for the physician to examine

  • Participates in teaching and educating patients and families about communicable or chronic medical conditions affecting their health

  • Tracks and locates patients or contacts throughout Maricopa County who suffer from or were exposed to a communicable disease

Working Conditions

  • The majority of work is preformed out in the field, varying between a clinical setting and home visits in diverse communities with extended periods of standing, walking, reaching, and crouching and potential exposure to biohazard materials such as bodily specimens (e.g., blood, urine, oral fluid)

  • Will be required to drive to various locations within Maricopa County, in a personal vehicle, in all weather conditions

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull 20 lbs

  • Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency

  • Ability to obtain a CPR and First Aid Certification by the time of hire

  • Must complete the OSHA/Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure and Defensive Driving training within three months of hire

  • All employees, within one month of hire, will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health. Required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chicken pox) and annual Influenza. Some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
