ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP:

Under general supervision of the Chemistry Lab Supervisor and the direction of an assigned mentor when working in the shop, this position performs testing involved in the daily operations of the Chemistry Lab, as well as project-based assignments, administrative support, and other assistance, where needed. This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. During the internship, the Intern will learn how to take skills acquired in school and apply them in a manufacturing setting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:



  • Performs or assists with improvement projects regarding the Chemistry Labs and Metallurgical Lab.
  • Assists in chemical analysis of final steel samples.
  • Assists with maintenance and standardization of analytical equipment.
  • Assists in hardenability testing of jominy samples.
  • Prepares samples for testing.
  • Assists with providing reports, such as production, hydrogen, and chemistry, and be a resource to management and employees.
  • Required to develop a presentation of the projects and lessons learned during the internship. This presentation will be delivered to members of management near the end of the internship.
  • Abides by all policies and procedures established by the Company including plant safety regulations and work rules.
  • Must have ability and desire to work with others.
  • Meets attendance requirements.
  • Performs other projects and duties as deemed necessary.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

EDUCATION: Candidate should be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in Chemistry, Metallurgy, or Chemical Engineering.

EXPERIENCE: Must have completed at least freshman year.

PREREQUISITES:



  • Advanced math skills and problem-solving ability.
  • Analytical and detail oriented with both an interest and aptitude to work in a chem lab.
  • Well organized with ability to prioritize and multi-task in order to handle numerous assignments simultaneously.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and applications, including working knowledge of spreadsheets;
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Must be able to act objectively and within the strictest environment of confidentiality.
  • Flexible working schedule, when necessary.


PHYSICAL:



  • Must be able to withstand extreme temperatures, walk on uneven surfaces, and be able to work effectively at heights.


Will be required to submit to a criminal background investigation. Urine and hair follicle drug screening will be required upon offer of employment. Applicants must be able to provide a High School Diploma/GED upon hire.
