Job Description Summary

We are seeking an Assistant Director, Learning and Development to assist all Wake Forest University (WFU) faculty and staff to reach their professional goals and aspirations through collaborative, engaging, innovative and comprehensive learning and development opportunities. In this position, you should be enthusiastic about assisting others in learning and growing in their professional development, knowledge, and capabilities. It's vital to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work with different areas in skill development for faculty and staff. We are seeking an innovative leader who can facilitate, design, develop, implement, and lead professional development initiatives and training programs focusing on performance management, leadership and team development, and employee assessment across WFU for faculty and staff mainly in large group contexts. We expect this person to create training resources, events, workshops and programs to advance a culture of personal and professional development at WFU. The candidate must identify training needs and create strategic solutions for improving skills across teams. This position will report to the Director, Learning and Development.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Integrate multiple learning approaches throughout WFU; develop, deliver and facilitate in-person training and develop materials to assist faculty and staff in their development.
  • Create, plan, and facilitate in-person training seminars and workshops, online learning, and where applicable, accompanying educational materials (e.g., workbooks, guides, handouts).
  • Facilitate retreats, strategic planning, and other team events.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of development strategies and assist staff and faculty in maximizing learning opportunities.
  • Assist faculty and staff in developing themselves through learning journeys; create, implement, and assess competency/skill development efforts through curriculum development and design (e.g., curate courses in Workday Learning)
  • Create and implement innovative media or technology to foster an energizing learning and organizational development environment.
  • Use a variety of training and development strategies, such as e-learning, open communication channels, podcasts, or mentoring.
  • Maintain productive relationships with various WFU leaders and be fully aware of their learning and development needs.
  • Identify and assess current and future training needs through job analysis, career paths, and consultation with managers.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to design, develop, and implement training programs focused on recruitment and retention and other topics with units as needed.
  • Work closely with learning and development leadership and other HR functional area team members to identify individual learning initiatives that facilitate faculty and staff development at all levels (e.g., new hire, tier training, manager training as well as advanced skills training).
  • Work with faculty and staff to use data trends to determine needs and update existing programs or create new opportunities to improve abilities and strengthen the skill set of the department's existing workforce.
  • Evaluate and report training program's effectiveness, success, and ROI.
  • Keep abreast of new techniques in training and development; design effective training programs by applying the latest teaching and facilitation techniques to learning and development of WFU faculty and staff.
  • Support Director to assess department scope, strategy, and work planning.
  • Stands in for Director in Director's absence.
  • Performs all other related duties/projects as assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible experience in human resources, training and development, learning and development, or a related position.
  • Understanding of current techniques for adult learning and growth.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, facilitating, and evaluating client learning experiences.
  • Demonstrated experience assessing client needs and designing appropriate learning programs.
  • Experience with learning management systems as well as Microsoft Office and Google suite/workspace.
  • Ability to establish rapport with coworkers, and stakeholders across WFU campus (faculty and staff).
  • The ability to work autonomously while demonstrating good problem-solving skills.
  • Capable of speaking and writing with confidence and presenting to sizable groups.
  • Variable hybrid position.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Experience with RISE 360, Articulate 360, Workday or similar learning management systems.
  • Master's Degree.
  • Previous experience working in a higher education setting.

Accountabilities:

  • The position emphasizes collaboration through partnerships across the institution. While the role does not include supervisory responsibilities, the Assistant Director will work closely with faculty and staff to support their own professional development, that of their teams, units, or divisions, and organizational and institutional development initiatives.
  • Responsible for own work.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sedentary work primarily involves sitting/standing; communicating with others to exchange information; repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers; and assessing the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  • Work also involves moving across campus to attend meetings or engage with staff and/or faculty members (through presentations, facilitations, trainings) as needed.
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift objects up to 25 lbs.
