Position Summary: Children's Aid, established in 1853, is one of New York City's leading child and family service organizations. The Goodhue Center is a community center that provides after school, day camp, educational and child welfare services. Children's Aid is looking to hire a full-time Maintenance Worker as part of the Center's Maintenance team. The Maintenance Worker will help the team keep the location clean, compliant and operational.

Essential Duties



  • Perform routine manual tasks to maintain the cleanliness, sanitary conditions, and appearance of buildings and grounds. * Clean bathrooms, offices, hallways, and other assigned areas by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and polishing.
  • Empty and decontaminate trash containers.
  • Dispose of infectious waste when assigned.
  • Move, rearrange, and dust furniture and fixtures.
  • Mix or blend cleaning solutions to proper concentrations as necessary for various tasks.
  • Clean and wax floors using industrial-size mops and/or machines.
  • Strip and polish floors using buffing machines.
  • Thoroughly clean and sanitize children's toys nightly.
  • Wash blinds, windows, and walls consistent with Children's Aid approved techniques.
  • Sweep sidewalks, porches, and tiled surfaces.
  • Participate in offered trainings, workshops, In-Service days, and/or All-Staff conferences.
  • Maintain certification requirements and proof of attendance in professional activities.
  • Support the growth of the center, including participating in program-wide goal setting and individual and program self-assessment.
  • Adhere to all state and city licensing requirements and CPR/first aid certification.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe environment (e.g., safely store cleaning supplies, equipment, mark wet floors, etc.).
  • Shovel snow and remove ice.
  • Operate wet/dry vacuum for cleaning and shampooing carpeted areas.
  • Maintain equipment; report the need for painting and minor building or equipment repairs to the supervisor.
  • Replace light bulbs and report safety hazards to the supervisor.
  • Cut grass, trim shrubs, water plants, and perform other related duties on the grounds when assigned.
  • Perform custodial tasks necessary to maintain cleanliness and sanitary conditions.
  • Undertake various custodial tasks necessary for the upkeep of buildings and grounds, including planting, minor electrical, lighting, plumbing repairs, and other related tasks.
  • Serve as a courier between Children's Aid sites as needed and serve on the emergency response team.
  • Report building or equipment repairs to the supervisor and advise the Maintenance Supervisor on all maintenance and repair problems.
  • Monitor supply inventory on the floor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:



  • Certificates of Fitness within 6 months of hire, including S95 Certificate of Fitness for Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems and F07 Fire and Emergency Drill Conductor.
  • Team-oriented approach. Willingness to learn new skills while improving current ones.
  • H.S. Graduate/GED required
  • Basic computer skills required, particularly email and calendar.
