College Intern Accounting (Hybrid - Troy, MI) - Health Alliance Plan

Health Alliance Plan (HAP) is seeking a motivated and talented individual to join our Summer 2025 Intern Program. The program will run May12 - August 8. This paid internship will require full time availability (M-F) during the summer session dates. It will be a hybrid work format, involving a combination of remote and onsite work/events in Troy, MI (commute & housing expense reimbursement not provided).

GENERAL SUMMARY:

This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience and contribute to our mission of enhancing the health and well-being of the communities we serve. As a HAP intern, you will get exposure to various aspects of our organization and work closely with industry professionals, enabling you to develop valuable skills in the healthcare and insurance sector.

In addition to helping your assigned department meet its goals, you will collaborate with the other interns towards a common goal of completing a Capstone Project to present to HAP leadership and employees and the end of the summer. It will also provide the opportunity to attend fun networking events, make new connections, and enhance your presentation skills.

PROGRAM DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Conduct comprehensive research on industry trends, healthcare policies, and emerging technologies. Analyze data and prepare reports to support strategic decision-making processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assist in the planning, development, and implementation of projects. Contribute innovative ideas and support the execution of initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency and customer experience.
  • Assist in the collection, organization, and analysis of healthcare-related data. Ensure data accuracy and integrity, utilizing appropriate software tools and methodologies.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by addressing inquiries, resolving issues, and assisting with customer support activities. Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor while interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization and propose innovative solutions to streamline workflows and enhance productivity. Assist in the implementation of approved process improvement initiatives.
  • Create and maintain accurate documentation, including policies, procedures, and project-related materials. Generate regular reports, dashboards, and presentations to effectively communicate project progress and outcomes.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues across departments to support a positive and inclusive work environment. Contribute actively to team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.


Department Duties/Responsibilities:



  • Preparation of balance sheet and account reconciliations, ensuing compliance with US GAAP.
  • Prepare journal entries, ensuring adherence to accounting policies and proper documentation standards.
  • Analyze financial data and identify discrepancies during the month end close process.
  • Participate in team discussions and contribute to a collaborative team culture.
  • Assisting the team in financial statement preparation and internal reporting.
  • Participate in support of the implementation of a comprehensive Source to Pay technology solution.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Accounting Manager.


PROGRAM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:



  • Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, an accredited 4-year undergraduate or graduate program in a relevant field.
  • Excellent research, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data analysis tools.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated adaptability, initiative, and a desire to learn and grow.
  • Knowledge or interest in healthcare, health insurance, or managed care is a plus.


Department Education/Experience Preferences:



  • This position is best suited for a student pursuing a degree in Accounting.
