The Associate Judge serves as a judicial officer for the City of Peoria Municipal Court. This position involves working with a Presiding Judge assisting in adjudication of cases, including misdemeanors, city ordinance violations and other matters within the jurisdiction and authority of the Court; disposition of litigant appearances, motions, pretrial, and post-trial proceedings; and primary responsibility over trial and hearings. The Associate Judge ensures that court proceedings are conducted fairly, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

The ideal candidate for this position will have:



  • Proven record of upholding the PEORIA values (Professional, Ethical, Open, Responsive, Innovative and Accountable).
  • Extensive knowledge of Judicial Code of Conduct and Judicial Employee Code of Conduct.
  • Extensive knowledge of rules of evidence, appeal procedures, case management techniques, and methods of legal research.
  • The ability to participate in judicial education as required.
  • High ethical standards and possess a demonstrated history of abiding by the ethical principles as outlined in the Arizona Bar Associations - Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • The highest standards of integrity demonstrated by doing what the law requires even though the course of action is not the popular or political one.
  • An impeccable record of not being influenced by the identity, race, gender, political status, wealth or relationship of the party or lawyer before the judge.
  • Exceptional ability to communicate clearly and concisely, in writing and orally with a diverse audience of court staff, prosecutors, defense attorneys, law enforcement and the public.
  • Sound ability to gather pertinent facts, make thorough analysis, and arrive at sound conclusions.
  • Experience with comprehending and making accurate inferences from verbal and written material.
  • Proven ability to takesignificant decisions and exercise resourcefulness in resolving new problems.
  • The ability to understand, use, and follow the Court's electronic and digital formats.
  • The ability to operate automated case management systems including data entry reflecting judicial actions; operates electronic case files, electronic calendaring; electronic communications, such as e-mail and instant messaging.
  • Experience managing the cases scheduled in the division in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Experience managing multiple projects, prioritizing tasks, and meeting deadlines.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:



  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited school of law


Licenses and Certifications:



  • Arizona State Bar membership in good standing for the last seven (7) years.
