Main Duties & Responsibilities
Summary/Objective
As a Centerless Grinder SUO Trainee you must
be able to set up and operate a Centerless grinding machine to grind external
or tapered surfaces of metal workpieces to the specified tolerances under
supervision. The Operator will be able to operate any and all grinders used in
the cells in addition to processing documentation correctly, verifying visually
or with various precision measuring instruments to check product for accuracy.
The Centerless Grinder SUO Trainee labor grade 8 is also required to use basic
Machine Shop Theory to understand specifications to determine dimensions,
tolerances and parts to be ground. This position also requires excellent
communication skills both verbal and written, teamwork, interpersonal skills,
problem solving skills and integrity. The Operator must have great
self-motivation, excellent work habits, and a work ethic. They must be able to
follow all instruction given to them by their leaders and Management.
Essential Functions
Under general direction with periodic supervision or review performs the
following:
1. Mounts grinding wheels, regulating wheels, etc. per requirements of task. Dresses wheels to specifications.
2. Measures, marks and scribes stock for grinding.
3. Verifies dimensions, alignments and clearances to specifications either visually and/or with various precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc.
4. Regularly checks product for accuracy.
5. Operator must provide necessary counts, processes documentation correctly, and maintains daily production logs using computer software applications or production worksheets.
6. Keeps interim records for subassemblies, material, tooling, rework, etc. while in the cell.
7. Operator must be able to understand specifications such as blueprints, sketches, models or descriptions, or verbal orders for all products.
8. Must be able to collaborate well with other team members.
9. Must be able to take direction and communicate verbally and in writing in English.
10. Operator must be an active team member by participating in problem solving, team building, and all other team activities to improve the processes, productivity, quality, etc. of the production operations in a cell.
11. Operator must set up and calibrate grinding machines for the jobs performed.
12. Operator must perform duties where property, tools, equipment or machines may be damaged, or man hours lost through improper daily maintenance or attention to processing.
13. Operator must communicate to appropriate personnel any problems or concerns regarding quality of work received or time flow of work in progress as it affects production schedules.
14. Other tasks as assigned.

The Centerless Grinder SUO
Trainee position is a key and integral part of the manufacturing process. It
requires a self-driven individual with a willingness to learn. As learning
progresses the job will require more initiative in solving problems associated
with set-ups and machine operations. Operators will use various tools including
measuring tools to perform their day-to-day functions. At times, the Operator
may be required to lift fifty pounds. They will be working in a fast-paced
manufacturing environment that is loud. Depending on the season, the factory
can be extremely hot and very cold. They are required to always use proper
personal protective equipment when inside the factory. The Centerless Grinder
SUO Trainee must be able to fill in documentation correctly and accurately.
They must be able to read and understand qualification sheets. Employees must
be capable of applying basic mathematical operations including fractions and
decimals, as required by cell machining operations. They must also possess
entry level computer software and processing requirements. The Centerless
Grinder SUO Trainee must possess an elevated level of integrity and must
understand that they are manufacturing critical components for the Aerospace
industry. Therefore, all company rules and regulations as decided by Management
are always to be followed and observed without exception.
Equipment/Process
Responsibilities- Performs
duties where property, tools, equipment or machines may be damaged, or man
hours lost through improper daily maintenance or attention to processing. Sets up and calibrates grinding machines for the jobs performed. Learns to maintain and effect minor repairs of machines.
Material
or Product Responsibilities - Performs
duties that require close attention to work and supporting documentation
specifications and other requirements. Responsibility for accuracy of parts
machined. Visually and / or with measuring instruments, checks work performed
for proper results. Work is frequently checked by trainer.
Responsibility for Communications - Accuracy of
communication is mandatory to the successful production and qualification of
workpieces. Must communicate to appropriate personnel
any problems or concerns regarding quality of work received or time flow of
work in progress as it affects production schedules.
Safety
Responsibilities - Good housekeeping and adherence to Company safety rules is required.
Protective equipment and clothing should be worn as appropriate to the task at
hand.
Initiative
and Ingenuity - Initiative
to learn the job is a basic requirement for this entry level position. Minimal
initiative or ingenuity toward production processes is required at first due to
entry level nature of work. As learning progresses, the job will require more
initiative in solving problems associated with the set - up and operation of
various grinding machines concurrently and use ingenuity in adapting tooling
and shop ids to complete machining operations. Making suggestions for improving
the efficiency of workflow or equipment operation. Takes on or reports for
additional work as current tasks are completed. Performs other work-related
tasks as deemed necessary by Company needs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Environmental Surroundings - Works in a
machine shop environment where noise, temperature fluctuations, etc. are less
desirable than in a typical office environment.
Unavoidable Hazards - Possible hazards related to finger
and hand injuries, muscle strains and eye strain. Exposure to moving
mechanical parts, metalworking fluids, and airborne particles. Protective
equipment and clothing appropriate to the task at hand is required.
Qualifications
EFFORT
Physical - Able to lift up to 50 pounds. Hand and finger manipulation in using computer
equipment etc. Able to reach, bend and stretch, maneuver heavy carts and travel
to various areas of production. Most job assignments require continuous
standing for long periods in excess of 2/3 of the workday.
Mental - Work at times is highly repetitive and
monotonous. However, set - up and / or machine repair is varied and may require
improvisation and ingenuity. Reasoning ability required to interpret basic
specifications and documentation of a technical nature. Must be able to draw
valid conclusions from a variety of machining technical variables. Required to
organize workflow for best efficiency.
Visual - Close attention to detail with moderate eye
concentration for extended periods of time. Able to read documentation,
specifications, various precision instruments and reference material such as is used by the
Company. Requires close and distance vision, peripheral vision, and
color vision.
EDUCATION/TRAINING
Requires basic mechanical and/or equivalent skills along
with job knowledge familiarity in machine operations, tools and equipment which
are similar or comparable to those used by the Company and which are necessary
to fulfill job requirements. Must read precision measuring instruments such as
calipers and micrometers and engineering diagrams similar or comparable to
those used by the Company.
