Summary Duke Energy is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Engineer to join our Probabilistic Risk Assessment team as a Principal Seismic PRA Engineer. In this role, candidate will be responsible for performing probabilistic risk assessments (PRA) with a focus on seismic hazards. Candidate will work closely with other engineers, vendors, and industry groups to develop comprehensive risk assessments and mitigation strategies for seismic risk. This position will also support Duke's PRA team's broader mission to ensure the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of our nuclear fleet. Responsibilities
- Lead seismic PRA projects and provide technical expertise in seismic risk assessment.
- Develop and implement methodologies for assessing seismic hazards and their impact on structures and systems.
- Perform detailed analyses of seismic data and develop probabilistic models to evaluate risk.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate seismic PRA into broader risk assessment frameworks.
- Present technical reports, findings, and recommendations to Plant Management.
- Stay current with advancements in seismic PRA methodologies and industry standards.
- Support Industry Seismic Groups such as EPRI and the JCNRM
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and team members.
Basic/Required Qualifications
- Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
- Minimum of 12 years of engineering experience.
- Nuclear requirements for the Principal level include EITHER a Professional Engineer registration or one of the following: a Master's Degree in a technical discipline, SRO certification, an RO or SRO license, or Technical Nuclear certification.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in seismic PRA or related areas.
- Detailed experience with nuclear power plant seismic PRA specifically of the Southeast US Seismic hazard spectrum.
- Familiarity with industry standards and regulatory requirements related to seismic risk assessment.
- Strong knowledge of probabilistic risk assessment methodologies and seismic hazard analysis.
- Proficiency in seismic risk modeling software and tools.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Specific Requirements
- Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
- In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
- Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
- Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
- This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
- Occasional overnight travel.
Working Conditions
- Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
- The position is based in Charlotte, NC
- Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both remote and onsite location.
