The Engineer Ill position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides engineering /technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.

  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.

  • Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketchesrelated to well-defined problems and analyses of medium scope and complexity.

  • Conducts engineering and related studies.

  • Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces.

  • Competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.

  • Possesses and applies fundamental & relevant engineering concepts, practices and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.

  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Maintains accurate records and files and supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Project Management:

  • Works with program team to evaluate customer- or trade ally-submitted project application for adherence to program requirements and accuracy of estimated energy usage.

  • Consistently applies program standards and evaluates projects by providing guidance to customers and/or vendors with determination of data required, infrastructure needs, and technical specifications.

  • Must understand distribution processes for load requirements (i.e.: load calculation and CIAC/Line Extension Plan) and be able to assist with complex load calculations that drive customers credit eligibility.

  • Provides technical oversight to contractors and vendors for the installation of electric vehicle infrastructure and charging station at customers' location - both residential and a wide variety of non-residential locations.

  • Interacts directly with customer account executives, customer delivery, contractors, vendors, and customers to assist them in developing viable, meaningful electric vehicle charger projects.

  • Educates customers and vendors on electric vehicle program requirements and process.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Operations:

  • Assists in the evaluation of program's overall technical processes and procedures.

  • Makes recommendations to program managers for adjustments to program policies and procedures.

  • Stays abreast of technology developments and changes in customer preferences.

  • Identifies opportunities to improve the customer experience with programs.

  • Assists in technical support of responses to program inquiries for regulatory filings, reporting and external stakeholder meetings.

  • Provides engineering support to other regulated programs within the Transportation Electrification group.

  • Assists with analysis needed to make these programs more effective from a cost, operation, and customer satisfaction standpoint

  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors Engineering, Bachelors Electrical Engineering, Bachelors Mechanical Engineering, Bachelors Civil Engineering, or Bachelors Industrial Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • 4 years of related work experience.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools such as Salesforce and/or SiteTracker.

  • Working understanding of customer delivery (utility distribution) processes, procedure and systems.

  • Working understanding of construction project and management.

  • Knowledge of electric vehicle technologies & solutions with emphasis on installation and ongoing maintenance of EV chargers.

  • Working understanding of customer delivery and construction management.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.

Specific Requirements

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience.

  • A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
