Job Summary

Milwaukee Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and energetic leader to oversee the department's wellness program which includes both community and employee wellness, as well as management of a partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin to improve the health and wellness of community members.

Primary duties include hiring and supervising part-time staff, planning and administering health and wellness activities for youth, adults, and staff during non-school hours, program and staff evaluation, and collaborating with MPS Departments and community organizations.

The successful candidate has a passion for wellness and helping our community gain a greater understanding of how to live a healthy lifestyle.

The salary range is $62,689.53 - $90,032.77

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required from an accredited college or university in health and wellness; parks, recreation, and tourism management; community sports management; kinesiology, or related field. May substitute two (2) years of relevant recreation experience for one (1) year of education. A combination of both education and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum one (1) year of full-time experience in urban recreation preferred. Two (2) years of graduate assistant experience or equivalent part-time experience and/or relevant certifications will be considered.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certifications in First Aid, CPR, and Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP), Health and Wellness Coaching, and Personal Training. Responsibilities

  • Coordinate health and wellness related programs and activities year-round, at multiple locations.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate part-time staff.
  • Conduct regular site visits to wellness programs to ensure program quality.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of program operations and update program content to ensure it is relevant to participant needs and interests.
  • Order supplies and maintain inventory of program materials.
  • Identify qualified vendors to work with MPS in the provision of wellness programming during non-school hours.
  • Assist in preparing and coordinating promotional materials to generate interest and growth in participation.
  • Coordinate facility scheduling for program activities.
  • Identify creative ways to secure additional resources to enhance programming.
  • Conduct instructor in-service training.
  • Coordinate Milwaukee Recreations role in the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Employee Wellness On-Site program for schools and MPS departments.
  • Establish partnerships with other MPS departments, schools, governmental units, agencies, and community-based organizations to develop quality wellness programs throughout the City of Milwaukee.
  • Manage vendor contracts.
  • Prepare wellness budget and track expenditures ensuring budget limitations are followed.
  • Assists with Recreation Department activities as needed.
  • Serves on various community or employee committees as required and assigned.
  • Actively supports the MPS Five Priorities for Success.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
