About the role The Environmental Specialist will be responsible for ensuring environmental regulatory compliance at both Alexandria, VA and Huntsville, AL Thermomechanical Treatment (Waste to Energy) Facilities. Under limited supervision, the Environmental Specialist supports the company, regional, and corporate programs by administering policies and procedures which have been developed to maintain compliance with all environmental requirements. This position is on-site and will be located in Huntsville, AL with travel about up to 30% of the time to Alexandria, VA or located in Alexandria, VA with travel up to 30% of the time to Huntsville, AL. Key Responsibilities: * Oversee environmental compliance for the Alexandria, VA and Huntsville, AL facilities. * Prepare all reports for federal, state and local regulatory bodies. The facilities have regulatory permits or requirements associated with Air, Solid Waste, Wastewater, Stormwater and storage tanks. Reports must be accurate, timely and the employee is responsibility for maintaining all records to be available upon request. * Proactively work with facility operators and maintenance personnel to resolve and prevent environmental issues as they arise. Must be able to adapt to changing circumstances, communicate well with others and exercise good judgement to resolve issues and meet required deadlines. * Maintain the facilities' Environmental Management System. Coordinate with Operations and Maintenance personnel to verify required monitoring, testing, reporting requirements are met and maintained. * Utilize Ideagen software to manage Action Item Due dates and track environmental activities. Coordinate with facility personnel, other Reworld resources or contractors to complete permit required activities, including but not limited to, Annual Stack Testing, Quarterly CEMS Audits, Quarterly Greenhouse Gas sampling, , ash residue testing, wastewater sampling and stormwater sampling, * Monitor and Analyze Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) data to ensure accurate reporting required by facilities' air permits. Communicate any concerns or deficiencies to the Maintenance and/or Operational departments for correction. * Initiate Root Cause Analysis (RCA), as needed, to identify the cause(s) of environmental non-conformance (ex. Air Permit Exceedance, Chemical Spill, Receipt of Unauthorized Waste) and facility or Reworld resource personnel to apply corrective actions based on the lessons learned. * Liaison with client-owner and/or environmental regulators (Air, Solid-Waste, Wastewater, Stormwater, Storage Tanks) for regulatory inspections. Participate in environmental audits, as required. * Maintain Reworld internal reporting and recordkeeping standards (Ideagen ash sampling and data entry, reagent use data entry data entry reports for permit deviations, weekly walkdown reports, inspection reports, etc.) Utilize PowerBI to present environmental data or Key Performance Indicators, as needed. * Review Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to determine waste disposal requirements, spill reporting, or other reporting requirements associated with chemicals or mixtures. * Maintain strong working relationship with client-owner environmental department and Regulatory personnel. * Functions as a proficient environmental/regulatory specialist working within the limits of environmental permitting and compliance issues for Company operations. * Provides technical assistance and training to facility operations to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and/or company environmental regulations. * As time allows, participate in community outreach events. Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, or equivalent and a minimum of 5+/- years of experience in the environmental field; especially the air (or solid waste) field. * Must have strong written and oral communications skills and demonstrate ability to work creatively within the regulatory framework. Must have a high attention to detail, self-motivated, organized and accountable. * Strong computer, technical, and writing skills are needed. Ability to demonstrate how your actions support Reworld Values and Behaviors, including Safe and Inclusive Workplace, Delivering Results through Trust and Building Breakthrough Capabilities. * A working knowledge of VA & AL state environmental regulations and federal environmental regulations in air required (waste and water is a plus). Physical Demands: * While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, stoop, kneel, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard * While performing the duties of this job at the facilities, the employee periodically enters and inspects various plant areas with rotating machinery; this role requires the ability to climb stairs and move about the plant atmosphere, and is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high places; fumes or airborne particles; chemicals; outside weather conditions; heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. * Ability to collect ash and water samples, as required by permit Shift: * This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are normally Monday through Friday, 8 hours, day shift * In cases of environmental emergencies, work could occur outside of a normal work week * Travel is expected about 30% of the time for this position.
