Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $2.1 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office.

N3B is a limited liability company owned by HII Nuclear Inc. and BWX Technologies, joined by our critical subcontractors Longenecker and Associates and Tech2 Solutions.

N3B brings operational discipline, proven approaches and predictable results to the Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract.

Position Location:

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Position Summary:

If you enjoy building systems from the ground up, or the challenge of expanding existing distribution systems to accommodate a customer's needs, this is the job for you. N3B is currently seeking early career Electrical Engineer 1/2 to support the design team by performing the duties related to the successful completion and delivery of projects and tasks. Assignments typically include a mixture of on-site and office duties. The successful candidate will understand the NEC and how to apply it to the complex industrial distribution systems we encounter on projects. The activities you will be supporting may include transformers, power panels, control panels and VFD's. Documentation to define the project may include system layouts and sizing, one-lines, wiring diagrams, equipment specifications, and transformer sizing to name a few. Excellent communication and organizational skills are required as well as the ability to multi-task and work independently and in a team.

While working to achieve N3B objectives, the successful candidate will: ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner through maintaining required safety, security, and operational training. Making safety, security and quality an integral part of every task including taking the necessary steps to pause or stop work as necessary to ensure the safety and security personnel and the job site.

Responsibilities/ Duties (may include, but are not limited to):

  • Support field investigations or assessments. Collect data and gather information or documents. Perform standard computations or analysis. Prepare drawings and visual aids.
  • Perform electrical design modeling to develop safe and reliable electrical power system designs including protection requirements.
  • Apply prescribed techniques and procedures in accordance with established criteria to perform assigned tasks.
  • Familiarity of system protection functions and controls in industrial power distribution systems at medium and low voltages
  • Develop plan layouts, details, and one-line diagrams for lighting, power, security, and telecommunications systems designs
  • Collaborate in the development of detailed design drawings.
  • Proficiency with SKM system analysis software for load flow, short circuit analysis, and arc flash hazards is a plus.
  • Selection of distribution equipment to meet the system requirements
  • Participate with the writing and the production of project reports, forms, policies and procedures.
  • Work under the direct guidance and mentorship of senior engineers.

Education and Experience Required:

Level 1: Bachelors' of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields from an ABET-accredited college or university.

Level 2: Bachelors' of Science degree in Electrical Engineer program from an ABET-accredited college or university. A minimum of two (2) years in responsible charge of electrical engineering work and relevant experience, preferably in construction plan production, design calculations, and technical writing. Ability to understand and apply industry codes and standards.

EIT Certification is a plus. Experience with AutoCAD, is a plus.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Normally assigned to perform work in an office environment with occasional field work. Electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are anticipated. Minor hazards normally found in a northern New Mexico field data collection environment are anticipated. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline. Office and field work environment.

While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, the Electrical Engineer 1/2 will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner to include protecting the confidentiality and integrity of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This role will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security. Ability to obtain an L level Department of Energy security clearance.
