Newport News Nuclear BWXT Los Alamos (N3B) manages the 10-year, $2.1 billion Los Alamos Legacy Cleanup Contract for the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Environmental Management, Los Alamos Field Office.

Position Location:

This position is located in Los Alamos, New Mexico. (Position is eligible for Telework)

Position Summary:

Los Alamos Legacy Waste Cleanup (LLCC) Project, Business Services, Document Control, Records Management, and Regulatory Documentation, Regulatory Documentation team

The Environmental Remediation (ER) Program at N3B identifies and remediates environmental hazards associated with past Los Alamos National Laboratory operations and monitors groundwater and surface water to ensure the protection of the environment and the public. Much of ER's work is governed by the Compliance Order on Consent (Consent Order) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Individual Permit for Storm Water. The Regulatory Documentation Team prepares documents and submits them to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for final review and then to the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) or the EPA. The Regulatory Documentation Team also prepares documents and correspondence required by the LLCC for submittal to DOE.

The successful candidate will function as part of N3B's Regulatory Documentation Team to support the requirements of the Consent Order, the Individual Permit, and the LLCC. Team priorities change quickly; flexibility in adjusting to regulatory agency needs is an important qualification for team members. The success of the team depends on the cooperation of each member to fill in as needed.

This position reports to the N3B Regulatory Documentation Manager.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):

  • Communicates and collaborates with team members and project staff to plan, develop, and produce high-quality communication products in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Ensures projects adhere to schedules and deadlines; works simultaneously on multiple projects, independently setting work priorities to meet changing deadlines and scope-of-work definitions.
  • Performs mechanical and substantive edits, correcting grammar, technical usage, content, and organizational problems.
  • Performs proofreading, grammar, and full edits on technical, general-audience, and administrative documents; may rewrite or produce original writing.
  • Composites (compiles and formats) large, complex technical documents using a variety of software and equipment; determines file formats for graphic images and imports and integrates with text; imports and formats tables; reviews final print and web quality and adjusts processes to accommodate changes and resolve issues.
  • Prints, assembles, and prepares final print submittals to regulatory agencies; prepares and assembles final electronic submittals; operates associated equipment.
  • Creates and uses templates and style sheets to ensure product consistency and quality; tailors and improves templates and style sheets to fit project needs; responsible for helping to update and maintain team templates, checklists, and guidelines.
  • Maintains electronic drafts, reviews, finals, and archived files; organizes and retrieves archived files.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

  • Advanced understanding of the English language and the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Skill and ability to perform critical strategic thinking and to interpret broad requirements to develop and execute documents.
  • Proven ability to contribute to the organizational success and productivity.
  • Proven ability to contribute functional expertise to documents and communicate effectively at the highest levels.
  • Level of language skills, communication skills, reasoning ability and computer skills necessary to perform essential functions of the job (Advanced Level Microsoft Suite).

Education and Experience Required Level 3:

Bachelors' degree combined with 6 years of related experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position's duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.

Education and Experience Required Level 4:

Bachelors' degree combined with 12 years of related experience. However, a combination of education and relevant experience wherein the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the position's duties and responsibilities have been adequately demonstrated is acceptable.

Education Equivalency: 2 years of relevant experience for 1 year of college.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

Assigned to perform work in an office environment. Only electrical hazards and other minor potential hazards normally found in an office environment are anticipated. Job performance requires adequate visual acuity and manual dexterity for meeting the requirements of the discipline. Office work environment.

While working to achieve N3B LLCC objectives, the candidate will ensure all activities and operations are performed in a safe and deliberate manner to include protecting the confidentiality and integrity of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). This role will maintain required safety, security and operational training; assure procedural and regulatory compliance; and make safety, security and quality an integral part of every task; including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
