DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Intern, you will support the division's interagency work by focusing on collecting water samples to aid in minimizing exposure to HABs. In this role, you will work with staff from the division and other agencies to support the HAB project. Your work will include conducting field work and collecting samples from recreational bodies of water, focusing in the western part of the state. You may be assigned other HAB-related work, including conducting outreach activities, communicating with recreational waterbody staff, and participating in interactive teaching demonstrations. Additionally, you may support the public health emergency response mission of the Department of Health.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Summer internship with flex hours, 20 to 37.5 hours per week.
  • Internship will start May 2025 and run to August 2025.
  • You will be required to travel to waterbodies for sampling (rental or fleet vehicle will be available for use).
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • Current full-time enrollment in a bachelor's degree program or higher.
  • Good academic standing (as defined by a GPA of 2.0 or higher).
  • Pennsylvania residency or enrollment at a Pennsylvania college or university.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must possess a valid driver's license that is not under suspension.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
