The Beirne B. Carter Immunology Research Center is currently seeking a part-time", Lab Tech 2 or Laboratory Specialist assist the Animal Colony Manager, as a mouse colony technician. This position provides technical support to a basic science research laboratory that will consist of undergraduate students, research scientists, and technical staff. Students getting ready to graduate this coming May are strongly encouraged to apply. The tasks involve a combination of general laboratory duties including maintenance of a mouse colony (genotyping, husbandry, database management), the inventory of lab supplies, maintenance of lab equipment, and making common laboratory solutions. The lab professional will work closely with the PI and other lab members to learn and perform a variety of experimental procedures, including but not limited to, tissue harvesting and preparation, microscopy, and PCR. Applicants will also assist in maintaining meticulous records of mouse inventories, so should have a strong background in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. The applicant must be comfortable handling and working with mice The lab functions as a team effort and only those who are willing to actively engage, as a productive team player will function well in this position. Intellectual engagement is required as well; those seeking to know, grow, understand and learn will be best suited to this position. The individual should be self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges at hand. Preference to those with animal research experience. Minimum Requirements Lab and Research Tech 2 Education: Associate's degree Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience, which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience. Lab Specialist Education: Bachelor's degree. Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree. Physical Demands This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation. This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
