Job Summary

Works with the Media, Outreach, Volunteer and Education (MOVE) Team to develop, plan, and implement education and outreach programs and activities for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) that support the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries' education mission to inspire ocean conservation. Supports community engagement programs, develops training materials, and supports community outreach. Supports visitor center staffing and development.

  • Support day-to-day Eco Discovery Center operations including opening and closing duties such as turning on/off of exhibits and educational movie theater. Develops, plans, and implements education and outreach programs and events to inform residents and visitors about the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and foster sustainable use and protection. Act as Sanctuary Point of Contact at the Eco-Discovery Center in the absence of the EDC Manager.
  • Performs targeted FKNMS outreach at community events (setting up, tearing down and working informational booths, festivals, community events). Conducts presentations, training, and other speaking engagements for stakeholder groups.
  • Coordinates the Blue Star program for dive and snorkel operators including administrative duties, record keeping, promotion, training, educational material development and distribution. Assists in coordination for the Blue Star program for fishing guides. Provides technical support and development for FKNMS Blue Star online platforms.
  • Coordinates and implements programs that invite community participation in stewardship (i.e., Goal: Clean Seas Florida Keys) and meet sanctuary resource protection needs by mitigating threats to sanctuary resources.
  • Establishes contacts and serves as a liaison between the local marine related business community and FKNMS management; distributes and records interpretive and educational materials to businesses and to the educational community.
  • Supports implementation of the Restoration Blueprint and other adaptive management priorities identified by sanctuary leadership.
  • Provides supervision to interns or volunteers as necessary.
  • Supports other MOVE Team activities as necessary, including the Sanctuary Advisory Council, Traveling Trunks, WQPP meetings, etc.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience.

Desired Qualifications

This position will work from Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) offices in Key West, Florida

  • SCUBA diving certification is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of marine science, coral reef ecology and cultural resources; and local waters.
  • Experience communicating conservation topics to a wide range of audiences.
  • Experience conducting classroom and field activities and evaluating education programs.
  • Interpret state statutes and FKNMS regulations to the public.
