Band Assistant - Percussion Focus

Position Reports To: Dr. Johnathan Robinson, Band and Orchestra Faculty

Classification: Exempt, Stipended

Job Status: Part Time (~ 8 hours/week), 9.5 Month Schedule from early August through mid-May

Hours: Classes rotate on a block schedule. Work hours are approximately 1.5 hours per day, between the hours of 8:00 and 1:00, depending on the day. Some flexibility in scheduling is available.

Compensation: This position will be paid via a stipend, over the school year from August through May. The proposed stipend for the school year is $6800, depending on experience. This is a part-time position during the school year only, and therefore is not considered eligible for benefits.

Position Summary:

Brophy College Preparatory, Arizona's only Catholic, Jesuit high school, seeks a Band Assistant for approximately 8 hours per week to support the Jazz and Concert Bands, with a specific focus on percussion instruction and logistics.

The person in this position will assist the band director in developing the instrumental music program by providing percussion section support, rehearsal preparation, and concert logistics. Responsibilities include coaching percussion students, setting up and maintaining percussion instruments, organizing sheet music, and ensuring smooth transitions during rehearsals and performances.

The Band Assistant will also help coordinate percussion needs for concerts, performances, and festivals, ensuring equipment is properly set up, maintained, and transported as needed.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Attend 2-3 student performances per semester
  • Assist the band director in the Jazz and Concert Bands rehearsals, focusing on percussion instruction, technique, and ensemble integration.
  • Provide coaching and support for percussion students, helping them refine their skills and prepare for performances.
  • Set up, maintain, and troubleshoot percussion instruments for rehearsals, concerts, and festivals.
  • Organize and distribute sheet music and instructional materials for the percussion section.
  • Assist in concert logistics, ensuring seamless percussion transitions during performances.
  • Help coordinate percussion-related needs for off-campus performances, festivals, and competitions.
  • Work with the Art and Innovation Department to support musical events and productions on campus.


Preferred Qualifications: Commitment to the mission and values of Brophy's Catholic, Jesuit identity. A bachelor's degree in music, education, or a related field and teaching experience is preferred. General knowledge of drum set and concert percussion, etc.
