Job Title: Natural Resources GIS Intern

Hiring Range: $21-$23 per hour

Position Summary: The City of Aspen Parks and Open Space Department is accepting resumes and work samples from talented GIS, Ecosystems, Natural Resource, and other interested University of Colorado students for a remote 2025 Summer internship with the City of Aspen, Colorado. Located in the upper Roaring Fork Valley, the City of Aspen Parks and Open Space team oversees a world-class portfolio of parks and recreation facilities and an extensive open space and trails network. The ideal candidate is committed to innovation, sustainability, and working on GIS projects.

Supervision Exercised and Received: The position works under the general supervision of the Landscape Architect and Natural Resource Manager.

Essential Job Functions:
*May Develop GIS layers for project development and project tracking
*May Assist in developing a tool to assess tree and vegetation health using Lidar data
*May Assist in refining a system to manage natural resource assets including field collection tools, workflows, and inventories.
*May Create an online story map to display Parks and Open Space inventory, history, and/or natural resource plans and initiatives.

Minimum Requirements:
*Pursuing a bachelor's degree or master's degree at the University of Colorado in one of the following: Geography, GIS, Environmental Studies, Environmental Design, Environmental Sciences, Landscape Architecture, Statistics, or Data Science.
*Experience in GIS is required.
*Must possess a valid Colorado driver's license or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.

NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.

Position Type and Work Hours: Temporary, no more than 10 hours per work week, Monday-Friday, hours may vary with workload. Evenings may be required in addition to or instead of normal hours. Start and end dates can be adjusted to accommodate the school calendar.

Work Environment:
*Indoors: Remote work environment
*Outdoors: The ideal candidate would be willing to travel to Aspen one to two times during the internship to connect their remote internship with City employees and City-owned properties. Lodging and per diem would be covered by the City of Aspen .
