This position will be under the Communication Systems and Agile Processing Subdivision (CSAPS) within MPD. We develop innovative solutions in overhead signal collection and processing, covert RF communications, wideband software-defined signal processing, electronic warfare (EW), and Alt-PNT. We also have end-to-end capability to take an idea from concept, through modeling and simulation, to hardware prototypes that fly in space.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Maintain and set up equipment, fabricate hardware components, and support scheduled field tests both on-site and off-site.

  • Collaborate with staff in fabricating and testing RF and digital electronics in a research and development environment.

  • Assist in managing the laboratory environment, including organization, cleanliness, equipment inventory, and calibration.

  • Acquire laboratory supplies and measurement and test equipment for the labs.

  • Assist engineers in setting up and monitoring test equipment and prototype hardware.

  • Perform tests with engineers, co-developing, executing, and improving test procedures.

  • Occasionally perform routine IT tasks such as patching, rebooting, and software installation.

What You Need to be Successful - Technical Specialist III

Minimum Requirements:

  • Four or more years of experience with an Associate's Degree or equivalent vocational/military training, or five or more years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Experience working in a laboratory or equivalent environment, adhering to safety procedures and maintaining equipment.

  • Basic proficiency with standard business applications such as Microsoft Office.

  • Quick troubleshooting skills.

  • Effective team player.

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision, self-initiate activities, and meet timelines.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance issued by the U.S. government (U.S. citizenship required).

  • Willingness to travel domestically up to 10% of the time.

In addition to the above, the minimum requirements for Technical Specialist IV:

  • Familiarity with either electronics or digital test equipment

  • Experience working with customers and on project teams.

  • Vocational trade school, apprenticeship program, or equivalent 10-12 years of related industry experience.

  • Leadership of development projects and mentoring junior staff.

  • Circuit assembly and fabrication skills: soldering, packaged component attachment (QFN packages), operation of circuit board fabrication machines, 3-D printers, die attachment, wire-bonding.

  • Ability to interact with engineers in their area of technical knowledge, providing insights and suggestions.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Effective interpersonal skills to coordinate efforts and collaborate with internal and external organizations.

  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to changing organizational needs.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Mentor and supervise the work of less-experienced technicians, providing technical leadership and review.

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:

  • Basic project management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and projects.

  • Basic understanding of IT and network systems.

  • Basic knowledge of scripting languages such as Python or Matlab

  • Layout skills: understanding of analog, digital, and microwave circuitry best practices; ability to create mechanical drawings of complicated structures.

  • Current and active security clearance

  • Experience working with digital communication systems

Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
